1998 seadoo sportster 1800 engine question

Hey guys I'm new to the forum and have an engine question. I just picked up a 1998 SEADOO SPORTSTER 1800 which is missing the COMPLETE port side engine with all accessories (muffler, carbs, starter, etc). I'm planning on buying a 1995 XP which seems to have the same engine so that I can swap the engine from that one into the boat. I know for sure (at least I think) that the muffler is different but what else would I have to change on the XP engine to make it compatible with the Sportster? Any help would be great appreciated... thank you.

I did the exact same thing you are planning. I have a 1997 Challenger 1800 and I bought a 1997 xp to get the engine out of the xp and stuff it into my challenger. Everything was swapped with no problems at all. As long as you make sure the engine is correct you should be fine. The only thing I had to change was the PTO output on the engine.

wow everyone is looking for a engine....
You need the 717/720(80 hp) which does not the the RAVE system(caps with red dot which is the 110 hp)

yes my mistake... thought the sportster 1800 had 787's like my challenger 1800.... they're actually 717's

Nope your good. you need the 717/720 model.
Not the 787 with the RAVE valves.

I saw you post before edit and buying another ski for the engine isn't that bad. Just part out the rest and make some back

Alright here is an update. I just bought a 95 xp which has the same engine as the boat. The ski is in rough shape cosmetically but it does turn over although there is no spark so it doesn't start. Both cylinders are reading at about 120 psi give or take a few. Here's one thing I'm worried about. When I went to buy it, it cranked no problem. Now when I got it back to my garage as I was tinkering trying to see if it would start there were times where I would press the starter button and the electrical box would just click. I looked around and after knocking on what I think is the stator cover (white, faces the front of the ski) the starter would kick in. So now sometimes to crank the engine I have to knock on that cover. Does it mean I should change the stator? Thanks again guys.

Crap. 3yr old thread. Boat was sold that year. This engine that I bought from the xp needed a top-end. I did so, but either I didnt break it in properly or installed top end wrong because engine lost compression 30min into break in. I thrn found a good deal on another ski and swapped engines out AGAIN. Both engines were running smooth. On first run they both cutoff. You can read more details about that ride here...

Oh man, sorry to hear about all your trouble.. did you end up getting another boat or ski?

Well 2 years ago I bought dual 1993 yamaha vxr's for almost nothing. They are old but rock solid reliable. Engines have never been touched and they still run great. First year I had them I got sent away on military training and wasnt able to winterize them. I thought that would be a problem... not at all, after a little marvels mystery oil they started right up. Lets see. In dec 13 I bought dual yamaha vx110's with thoughts of thoughts of a small rental business in miami but that didnt go smooth, so I just sold them and about to pick up a speedster 200 supercharged for this season.
