I have a 98 Challenger 1800......Finally fired her up for the first time this season and what would you know the left hand throttle cable broke right at the pin connection under the throttle lever....

I have found replacements online for 180 bucks!!!...Is there anyway I can salvage the current one seeing as the entire length of cable is intact only part that snapped is right at the lever!

Also the Right hand side (Drivers Side) Is sticking and i am not familiar at all with this setup Can anyone driect me to the right section in the Manuel or any advice at all to fix these issues I can not find any info on this anywhere!

I understand how old the boat is which makes it harder to find parts etc...but this thing is in tip top shape! seeing as i live in upstate NY No salt water here!

Any help pictures anything would be seriously appreciated where the cables run to are underneath the carbs it is so hard to get down in there to see whats going on i have no idea how they work!

is the lever sticking, tight tension, or is the carb linkage sticking as in high idle or no return idle speeds?

there are tension adjustment screws on the throttle/shift control lever`s under the base/bezel. You`ll need to remove the bezel and mounting harware to pull up the throttle control to view and adjust that them.

I recommend replacing the cable. true these parts aren`t cheap, try SBT to see what they have.

you will need to view the shop service manual to properly adjust the throttle/oil pump/wot pull correctly...

hope this was helpful...

Thank you so much for your quick reply I think I read your hole thread on your boat "Reel Swell" which helped me quite a bit with other problems....We have the same boat

As for the problem I am almost postive that the carb linkage is sticking and that is where I am clueless is that hole linkage setup...the other motor with the broken cable snaps right back no problem when pulling it by hand....I almost think the spring on the other one is shot tried wd 40 no luck

And as for the broken cable i think i will go with your advice and just purchase a hole new one it is gonna be hell for me to install it into the carb linkage i hope the shop manual has some specs on that....

Once again thank you so much for your fast and very helpful reply....

my first suggestion is to download a shop manual, if you need a hand on where to get PM me...

Once you get the airbox off the carbs, you`ll see how easy it is to remove and intall the cable. there is a 1,2,3 order to the final adjustments. but once you see the deal, you`ll go, wow, cake walk...lol...

leave the broken cable in place until you are ready to swap it out with a new one. look for zip ties around the whole bundle of cable where they come out of that corrugated tubing alongside the fuel tank, cut the zip ties. when your ready to pull the cable after disconnecting the steering assist up front, and the throttle control is lifted up and rested out of the way, you can attach the end of the new cable to the old from the back and pull the whole deal thru, or vice versa, which ever you fell would best suit the job...

don`t sweat it, PITA it is, but you gotta do it, and it will be good to go when your done...

as far as the high idle sticking issue, I`m afraid to say it is probably the MAG carb throttle shaft not returning all the way due to it being to tight from fuel varnish buildup... and that would need to be disassembled and cleaned properly...
if you have not serviced the carbs, it def wouldn`t hurt to do all 4...

oh, and Thanks!, yeah that boat is "Reel Swell" alright...lol...

I have downloaded the shop manual thank you tho.......
And what you have said sounds just about right....The last thing the old man wanted to do was pull the carbs out i will try to convince him that is the only way to go because I do not think it has anything to do with the tension seeing as they seem the same on both...so you make perfect sense...

Thanks pale you have offered me more insight to this issue then anything i have been able to find on the inter web thanks again man seriously! We have only had this boat out twice and have owned it for 4 years! Can not wait to get this straightened out so we can open that throttle and haul! Take it easy pale

you are very welcomed. to bad you didn`t reside closer, I`d lend a hand!

easy to check the tension: when the cables are disconnected from the throttle control, see how they perform, then go from there... good luck!

yeah, I have over 350 hours labor and counting into mine, missed a lot of the season, and still adding stuff and touching up...
maybe a few more months here. I`ll give it hell next season tho!
