Hello all! I started working on one of my project skis its a 1998 GTX Limited. Was told it ran fine but that turned out to be the other jet ski in the deal. When I took it out it would rev to about 3,000 then die out and have trouble starting again luckily wasn't too far from the dock. I was getting the 12v low on the dash. So came back home and started diagnosing the Stator first. When I tested I was getting 0.5 ohms on all three connectors and no connectivity with ground. I can always go and double check that to make sure im doing it correctly. The battery was drained all the way to 5v and wouldn't recharged so I had to go get a new one. Well I ordered a used MPEM off eBay that was said to run fine with no issues. I plugged it in and go no beep or anything with the key with it. The dash would also come back on after pulling the key. Should I just try rigging one of the external rectifiers up? Or any other tests I can do? Any Suggestions?

To test the rectifier, start ski and check voltage at battery with a volt meter, should be 13.5 to 14.5

Read my engine run away thread before you do. I trust a 951 as far as I can throw a bull dozer. They love running away.

If it runs away and you havae idle throttle the engine doesn't get enough oil. Lucky for me my first one I had premix in there as well as the injection. Scary stuff. I'm gonna recommened to my people not to run the 951s on trailers. LIke I say, I'm 2 for 2.

With no load it’s still getting enough oil during a runaway with just oil injection. The killer is the heat buildup and even premix won’t fix that.

Key is to not panic and either pull the choke or hold it wide open with lanyard removed to cool the combustion enough to stop as quickly as possible.

Easier said than done when you’re ski is screaming at 7,000 rpm.

I disagree on the oil but not matter what it's gonna melt if it doesn't get shut down. Engine runaway... now that is an interesting topic to research.

You can't just replace an MPEM module...you also need the coded DESS key to that MPEM...the "new" mpem won't recognize the original key.....the "new" mpem will need to be re-programmed to recognize your key.

I think .5/.6 ohm readings on the stator legs is ok. My guess would be the voltage regulator/rectifier is shot and not trickle charging the battery OR you got bad wiring/fuses somewhere in the voltage paths....corrosion, no matter how minute, will cause all sorts of problems.....time, patience and a meter are needed to work through the electrical system on older skis.....

Has it ever been apart before? the 98 magneto and 99+ are materially different. mixing them won't end well. Sometimes people before you aren't the best at repairs.

and yes - the MPEM needs programmed via DESS to your key(s), although I read some MPEMs can be shipped to work with any key. Reduced security, but less hassle.

Any MPEM should beep on key install - 2 beeps for good to go, and (I think) one long been for 'wrong key'.

You can test your buzzer by pressing start with the key OFF, if you press it a few times back to back it should long beep at you.

(I think) the 98 MPEM is different than the 99-02, but I'm not 100% on that. Check the brp parts site.

I bought another MPEM and still nothing, it was a new one with less removed. It started up for a few seconds on the trailer but would automatically die out. Im still getting 12v low messages. I believe the runaway was actually caused by a bad start stop button, it had cont all the time iv now replaced it though. I took it to the lake and it ran great for about 30 mins, full speed and everything. Then it started not starting up and running for a bit and saying 12v low and that was the old MPEM. I put in the new one and started a few times for a few seconds and then died out. Iv checked the spark plugs the battery ground, tried unplugging the stator at the engine. Im usually good at fixing them up, but im at a loss on this one!

Iv done that quite a few times. Iv changed between MPEMs multiple times. Unless you are referring to the MAG
