I have a 1998 GTS. I was stolen and vandalized :ack:. They tried to strart it and, after failing to do that, pulled the wiring out. I bought a Clymer manual and traced all the wiring out and connected everything back up.

The problem that I have now is I'm not getting any spark. Can someone very familiar with the GTS model describe the spark process?

I know the current is generated from the magnito.

What I'm curious about is how/where the spark is triggered?

Is there a hall effect type device in the magnito circuit?

What role does the MPEM play in the ignition circuit? It appears to me from the wiring diagram, to be a simple on/off security circuit that grounds the magnito (black/red stripe wire) when the lanyard is pulled. Therefore, if that part of the MPEM is bypassed, I should be able to get a good spark which would point to a problem with the magnito. Your thoughts?

Thanks for you help! (trying to get on the lake this weekend!!)

More info:

The lanyard is programmed to the MPEM. I get two quick beeps when I connect it. The starter turns over perfectly and the battery is new/hot.

Both of the fuses are good.

If you have any suggestions on what I should test next and what results to look for, please let me know.

You should check the ignition box for any broken wires at the coil. They can be broken fairly easily.

All the wires appear to be in good shape.

I'm going to check the voltages comming off the magnito this evening.

You know, now that you mention it, I get pretty inconsistant resistance readings from the primary side of the ignition coil.

Can you tell my what you get? My coil is 278000586.

I took some voltage readings tonight. I'm now convinced more than ever that I have a bad ignition coil. I'm getting 25.5 VAC to the primary which is in spec.

I'll know tomorrow.
