The RPM on my buddy's 1997 SPX oscillates roughly 1000 RPM when between 1/2 and full throttle position. It did it last year and he had it in the shop 6 times to have them tell me each time that it was fixed and it was not. The first trip out this year it ran prefect. Second trip it ran perfect until the fuel tank got low and then it started doing it again. Put new gas in (he says 87 octane is fine) and it continued to do it. I do not know much about skis but I told him I was going to work on it because the shop is obviously not doing any good.
I have stated by unhooking the fuel lines and and making sure that they are clear. There is a breather comming off of the front of the fuel pump that goes to a tee. From the tee one hose goes up under the hood latch and the other hose goes to a small rubber breather under the bump rail. The breather under the bump rail will not allow air in or out, at least not at the pressure that I can provide. I do not know if this is an issue or not, but it may mean something to someone who knows what they are doing.
I was going to proceed with removing all the lines and blowing them out, checking flow through the gas valve, checking fuel filter, draining and cleaning the fuel tank, and cleaning the carbs.
Is there anything special about the carbs on these things? I have had my share of quad and bike carbs apart but never one off of a ski. Please let me know if there is anything I should watch for.
Any help with this is appreciated. I don't know if there is anything else I should check past the fuel system. Possibly the electrical system?
Please let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Phil
