Hey everyone I’m new here and new to the jet ski world. I just picked up a 97 gsx and it has been sitting for a few years. Got the ski and a ez load trailer for 200 bucks. I just wanted to know what’s a good list of things I should do and look at before trying to start this ski. Any info would be great. Thanks

Hi Congrats on the ski, love the red GSX. Before trying to start it I would take the plugs out,,put a squirt of 2 stroke oil down each plug hole, try to rotate the engine by hand at the pto, if it rotated freely by hand, put the plug wires on the grounding posts and crank the engine over with the starter, keep an eye on the plug holes while cranking to see if anything blows out there. If nothing is blowing out the plug holes now would be a good time to take a compression test, 150 is new and 120 is rebuild time, drain the old fuel from the tank and add fresh fuel, I would pre mix the first tank at 40:1 in addition to the injection oil Until you are sure the oil injection is working. If it still has the grey Tempo fuel lines you will need to change those out for 1/4 ID black fuel lines with zip ties to hold in place, if it had grey fuel lines clean the micro filters in the carbs. At this point you could try starting it, if it runs, you should have a look at the small injection oil lines, if they look original with paint on them, they should be changed, if your going to be using a different brand of 2 stroke oil you will need to drain the oil tank, change the oil filter before adding the new oil, this machine needs a full synthetic low ash API-TC rated oil like XPS oil. Might want to inspect and clean the rave valves. Let us know how it goes

From my research online that pretty much what I was planning on doing. What do you think about doing the oil injection block off and just pre mixing the fuel. I’ve rode 2-stroke dirt bikes my whole life so I’m not new to 2-stroke engines. I just worry about the oil injection taking a crap then it blowing up.

I understand what you saying about the oil injection pumps, all my own machines have the oil injection except for a tigershark i have, i got it with the oil pump disabled. The consensus here and all over the internet has been to leave the oil injection in use as the pumps are pretty much bulletproof. You do however need to change the small oil injection lines from the pump to intake every 15 or 20 years. I have never read a single thread that said help, my oil pump failed and I lost my engine. If I ever start hearing of them failing I might consider running pre mix but it’s a bit of a pain to premix, oil consumption is higher with pre mix, if you do delete the oil pump, just remember you still need a supply of oil for the rotary valve and as I mentioned before I like to pre mix the first tank of fuel along with the injection oil till I’m sure the injection is working properly.

Compression on both sides was about 100 psi. The rave valves need rebuilt. The carbs are so corroded that I am thinking about buying a used set on eBay. The wear ring is cracked and broken. Also I am getting no beeps when I hit the starter but it does start.

May be best to cut your losses, or I Moran gains at this point. You can now sell the trailer for 400.00 and the ski for 100.0” or 200.00. Sounds like it needs everything and is corroded

One from Harbor Freight. My buddy also bought the ski that was paired with this one and it’s the same 97 gsx. We both got identical compression readings at 93ish psi. We used the same compression tester.

As mentioned you should try a different compression tester, I’ve heard 100 times of those testers reading 90 pounds no matter what the compression is, it blows my mind that they’re still selling them

Ok that’s good to hear I guess. I work at an equipment rental shop so I should be able to borrow a snap-on one for the day and see what I get. Also I was able to find all the parts I need off of marketplace for 225 bucks. So I’ll be able to get this thing going for pretty cheap compared to parts on eBay.
