1997 GTX Blowing 5 amp

Pulled my 97 GTX out of storage. Charged the battery. The battery was left disconnected while in storage. Hooked it back up and tried to start it. Fired over a few times, then went dead. Had no power to anything. Found the 5amp fuse in the mpem blown. Replaced it 3 times and it would blow every time. Then it stopped blowing fuses and still no power. Battery is at 12.1 amps. I am not even getting any beeps when I attach the lanyard. Is the mpem blown? What else can I check?

update... found the rear 15amp fuse was blown. Installed a new one and now the front 5 amp continues to blow.....

update.... oldest son just said.... "why don't we just use the big battery charger with the 12v start to make sure its not the battery?" I told him " We can't jump the batteries in these like that". He got quiet and said "Oh". I was like really dude, did you do that?......answer is yes. So is the MPEM fried? What do i need to start checking?
 
Yeah good chance you fried the mpem....You are 100 percent not suppose to jump start skis....I dont even charge the battery hooked up in the ski i throw a tender on and disconnect the pos lead. I think there is a bench test you can do on these mpems i could be wrong i would look into that..
 
No VTS..... I explained to him thats why we pull the batteries to charge instead of charging them in the skis as well. Was reading abut the diode that can be replaced. Would this be the item or the whole mpem? Are aftermarket ones available? What exactly does the mpem do?
 
Try unplugging the stator...Replace the fuse and get back with results..If fuse doesn't blow you found your issue.....You can replace the diode the goes bad but would not recommend unless your handy with a soldering iron and have steady hands. I would google the bench test for your mpem the older ones this is possible to test to see if this diode has failed.
 
unplugged the stator. installed a new fuse and it didn't blow.... also didn't get any beeps when the key was installed. plugged in the stator and fuse pops..... still no beeps
 
Skip to 4:20 Should be able to test from mpem side of stator plug disconnect the battery pos lead when performing this test and reinstall the stator lead on the motor.
 
Make sure none of the yellow wires have continuity to ground. And your coils should read .1-1 ohm between any two yellow pairs. If this test good unplug the rectifier red and black leads with stator plugged in and see if fuse blows.
 
If you have contiunity to ground its your stator if it test good its your rectifier...knock on wood but i think one of the two saved your mpem...I come to this by the stator unhooked not popping that fuse.

Also still could be the mpem because it pulls ground from the mag cover...Forgot this was the case on earlier models...So let me see if i can find a test yu can run to figure this out.
 
does the battery need to be disconnected for these test? And test the stator like video it shows? headed out to try that now....
 
tested the outside two and and got no overload but its damn hard trying to get those pins the way engine sits? any easy tips other and cuss and fuss? And now the rains from Christobol has started so I gave up for tonight. Ill move it under cover tomorrow between the showers and try again.....
 
i could not get to the pins at the stator so I tested them where they connected to the regulator. When i tested each pair i got am ohm reading of 0.000.
 
The black wire should be in the stator plug you might have to trace where it heads. Did any of the yellow wires have continuity to ground?
 
I did not check the yellow wires continuity to ground. I will check that tomorrow. Found this thread about checking the mpem....https://www.seadooforum.com/threads/1997-gtx-787-stator-problem.44405/ I may check the voltage coming through thats blowing the 5amp fuse like the OP did in the linked thread. Also from that thread.... "OK yup if it blows when you have the ebox ground connected with the extra wire and the Stator wasnt plugged in....its the MPEM." So i may try this too. Just need to get some more 5 amp fuses.

If it appears to be the mpem, is it just the diode that craps out or could it be other parts as well? I am sure i can solder in the new diode.
 
You will have to expose the area of the diode and solder it on...I mean if it ends up being the mpem its worth a go before dropping a few hundred on a mpem. I would suspect it would be just the diode but it is very case dependent and don't want to say one way or the other but give it a go cant hurt you can source that diode rather cheap
 
Thanks, I am going to try all these tips before repairing. If repairing doesn't work are any of the aftermarket Mpem worth buying?
