Hey guys I'm a newbie here and want to say Hi! I've got a few questions that I hope can be answered about a 97 GTI. First off it's a friends and he wants to sell it and I'm thinking about buying it.

It sat for the winter and the battery was dead so they went to jump start it and they said it made a turning over /clunking sound and thats it. They took it to a shop and the shop said the computer is fried and it would be "x" amount of $ to fix the computer and they can't guaranty that whatever made it fry the first time won't do it again. So my buddy said don't fix it and he's going to buy a new one.

He wants $1,200 for it, he bought it new and I know for sure it's been completly babied. Does this problem ring a bell for any seadoo owners? I've own a jetski way back when but been hooked on dirt bikes and ATV's lately and kinda want a jetski again.

Does anyone have any input or suggestions?

Thanks,
Travis

Check the fuses

Most likely the MPEM is fried.. a few hundred to get a new one.

Check the compression, should be around 150 psi each cyclinder. I wouldn't want to by a new MPEM and find the engine is trash too (about $1000 for a rebuilt SBT engine)

thanks for the reply. how can I check compression with out it cranking? do you think $1200 for it id a good deal not knowing whats wrong with it? anyone else have any thoughts?

okay guys I bought it and been checking things out on it. At first I saw the 5 and 15 amp fuses on the mpem were blown and replaced those. Then I found the battery was dead and replaced that as well. Now only one of my 5 amp fuses keep blowing as soon I put a new one in. I get no beep or anything out of it. I disconnected the grey plug with 4 wires at the front of top of the motor and the fuse won't blow when it's not connected. Does this mean my mpem is still good? What can I test next?

Thanks
Travis

okay I read somewhere on here to check the ohms at the fuse location. To clairify location I want to make sure this is how the fuses go. If the MPEM is out and your looking at it I have 6 fuse spots starting from the top I have: 5A, none, 15A, none, 5A, 15A. I pulled the last 5A out and hooked my negitive cable of my ohm meter to the ground near the grey plug at front of motor, and the positive cable to the left side where the 5A fuse goes and got ~1.2ohms then to the right side and got OL. Does this mean my MPEM is toast?

Thanks,
Travis

I tested the mpem following some online information and found that the mpem was the problem and not the stator. I pulled the mpem apart and tested the diode near the fuse block which tested bad, I found some correct diodes and put them in. I tested the mpem which is now working fine, then sealed it all back up. Now I get the beeps, cranks, and runs!!! Took about 2 hrs to do, since I was being careful. Thanks for everyones help. If anyone needs help with fixing it let me know
