First off - Great site!
This summer me and my father purchased a 1997 GTI that on the outside was in great shape. The previous owner had trouble getting it running so we bought it cheap thinking we could put a little money in it and have a good ski. It would start up and run fine on the trailer. Took it to the lake and it started up and ran fine but it would only get to approx. 20 mph and the engine would not rev. up. (holding it WOT) Then if you would hit a wave and the pump would clean out? it would rev. up and then it would take off and run 40-45 mph. As long as you held wide open it run 40-45 until let off again then and then it would bog down until you hit another wave.

My father decided to take it to the stealership to have it worked on. They checked compression. It was good (137 and 136). Said they checked pump and it was good. They said it needed the carbs cleaned and rebuilt. Cleaned and rebuilt carbs. Got it back and took it out same thing. (took 3 weeks to get back)

Back to stealership - This time they said it need and new exhaust pipe. (leaking water into exhaust) Got it back and took it out same thing (took a month to get it back)

Back to stealership - Not to happy - This time they said the shaft driving the pump was slightly bent and needed replaced - Replaced shaft and wear ring. (took a month to get it back)
Got it back and took it out same thing. After some arguing got them to refund some of our money. Not taking it back.

Any ideas on what we could check now. It still has the grey fuel lines on it. After reading this site I talked to the mechanic about the lines (2nd time we took it back) and he acted like I was crazy. He said there was nothing wrong with them. Could this cause the problem I am describing? I plan on relacing them anyway, but wanted to no if you guys had any ideas.
Thanks for your time, sorry for the long post. Any help would be great!

mike a

I have the same machine and doing the same things, had the same things done to, it , but also was told that it may be the gas lines so I had those replaced still have problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The gray fuel lines are what is causes the problem. The lines deteriorate, and clog the small filters in the carbs. I have heard of people cleaning the carbs and not replacing the gray lines and the problem never clears up.

It is possible that the carbs aren't adjusted properly either. The High Speed screw is set to "0". These have a plastic cap on them to keep them from being turned any more than 1/4 turn. The Low Speed screw is set to 1 1/2 turns. The screw has a pin through it. If you need to adjust the idle speed do NOT use the low speed screws to adjust it. Use the IDLE Screw to adjust both carbs at the same time. When adjusting the carbs be sure both carbs are in sync.

Keep us posted on you progress.

gurn and mike....I'd recheck the pop-off on the carb. should have 1.5n/s with pop off between 23-43psi... Meantime, try pop'n choke when ski acts up, see if it helps...been thru this, ended up, carbs werent pop'n consistantly..figured the pop'n choke idea, in meantime.
