1996 XP - dying out/hesitates at full throttle

Hello all,

I have a 1996 XP. Upon taking it out for the first time this season, I noticed the fuel light was on and I was low on gas (I neglected to top of the gas before winterization as some recommend). I refueled to full - but the gas light is still on.

More worrisome - at full throttle, it's dying out. Basically, it will run wide open for 3 seconds, then lose power for 3 seconds, and repeat. This seems to only happen at full throttle. Seems to run fine otherwise.

Any ideas? And could the two problems be related?

Same thing happened to mine, a friend was on it and it sucked up some sand.. If you gave it full throttle it did that exact thing you are describing. After running it out in the open for about 30 mins occasionally giving it full throttle it was fine again. That may be your problem....

That or your fuel pump may have build up which is what this sorta sounds like since you haven't used it in a little while.

i have the same problem but i pulled the carbs and went through them already im thinking maybe now i need to change all the fuel lines

clogged fuel lines may be the cause of that too... so sounds like you're on the right track

Have had similar problems with my new (to me) 96 GSX. Engine quit at 5500 rpm, then off throttle would idle ok and go ok up to 5500 rpm. Checked everything, gas, plugs, wiring, etc. Then moved the 3 way fuel valve to reserve, now runs like a champ.?Obvious problem in tank or fuel valve. Will try new fuel valve, then yank tank at end of season. Does this sound like something someone else has repaired, and worked?

I've replaced fuel lines before, but not the valve. Makes sense though...

mine 97 gsx chops out at full throttle, u can hold the start stop button or push on the key and she runs great. i thought mine was a fuel problem but it will idle all day long. thought about taping my thumb down on the button, or taping the key in!!!!! hahahaha

96 xp bogging full throttle

I have the same problem. In the monring I will see if my work paid off. i changed the fuel lines pulled carbs and cleaned, pulled both ib line fuel filters those where badly dirty, cleaned filter above fuel tank and the screen in the tank. Also pulled the rave valves and cleaned. I hope this works.
