Purchased used 1996 GTX 787cc in really nice shape with a starting problem. I installed carb rebuild kit, new plugs, drained old fuel and installed new battery. Now able to start but was running rough. Did plug readings, front cylinder was very lean adjusted high speed jet until nice brown plug color like rear cylinder. Compression test on cylinders are equal at 155 psi. When riding, a miss is present unless on mirror smooth water in straight line. Thought I had a fuel pickup problem, but today I discovered during out of water running while hooked up to water hose that ski runs fine at idle and troughout rev range. The problem occurs when the ski is moved from side to side or rocked on the trailer (very little movement rquired), the ski immediately stalls as if a kill switch was pushed. Starts up again and runs correctly, but the stight motion continues to immediately shut off the engine.

Is there some sort of inertia switch or safety switch that shuts down the motor on detected roll over? I have checked all electrical connections etc trying to find the problem, but problem persists.

I'm a long time motocross rider / hot rodder and repair all of my own vehicles regardless of level of complexity. This ski is ready to ride, I'm eager to wring the thing out, but this problem has squelched and chance of enjoyment to date.

This problem has be stumped, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for you reply

Engine Miss

How's it goin' Bill,
I would start the ski and then pull on wiring harnesses, etc.
I also would look inside the rear electrical box ( in front of battery ) for water. Look at the one in the front of the ski also. Your ski was also known to have a problem with the ignition timing sensor (behind front engine cover) coming loose from it's bracket and then just hanging by it's wires causing all kinds of running problems.
There is no tip over or angle sensor on your ski.
Good Luck, DAWG

Problem found and fixed Thanks DAWG for suggestion

The problem was water in the coil enclosure just in front of the battery as DAWG described. Cleaned out box and WD40 all connections. GTX now runs great with no engine shutdown when being shook side to side on trailer while running.

First time on this forum, member for only an hour or two and the problem I described was resolved by one of the members. I'm very impressed and appreciative for the assistance (there is hope for the world) :)

Seriously, thanks to DAWG if you are ever on Orlando come on by and take the ski for a ride.

electrical box

Glad to hear my thoughts on the issue helped you out. Make sure the rubber seal at the top of the box is in good condition. The water got in the box somehow..... usually a bad seal. Part no. for seal is 278 000 440 and cost about $11.00

Members.......

I would have gone in a different direction first, with looking into your problem. It's good to see that "DAWG" was able to help you before me.

Our members, especially long term, become so sufficient in their trouble shooting skills in helping out other members because either, they are mechanics from childhood or they learn about these machines from full use of all manuals in the library.

Personally, I think DAWG had a brewski before coming up with that answer:rofl:

Good work DAWG........I'll have to hit you up on your reputation for that one!
