1996 GSX Losing power after 5 minutes

I have a 1996 GSX that has a problem. It warms up well, pulls strong and hard for about 5 minutes. I can rev up to full throttle, accelerate strongly, turn and dive.....whatever I want to to. Then, after 5 minutes, it will not rev. It bogs, accelerates, then bogs, accelerates, then bogs again. Ultimately, it simply does not accelerate at all and simply dies.

Now I have read a number of blogs that talk about carbs, jet clogs, filter clogs, fuel pumps failure.......nothing seems to work. I have replaced the in line filters, one of the carb filters, the spark plugs, the fuel/reserve valve.......no avail.

I have yet to read about anything electrical, like some sort of electrical failure after the machine warms up. If is was a clog of some sort, wouldn't clog in the first 5 minutes? I am guessing that as something warms up or gets hot, it fails. Any ideas?

same problem

I am having the same problem with my 1996 challenger 787. I have done all of the same things, and read all of the answers you have, but cannot figure it out. I am blowing cylinder head o rings and taking water into the head. Let me know if you find anything that works and I'll do the same.

I have a 1997 Seadoo GSX. I had a similar problem with mine last year. It would start just fine, but die back out. The harder I ran it the quicker it would die. If I just barely pressed the gas it would go a good distance before it died. Anyway It tuned out that it was an exhaust leak. Exhaust gases were leaking inside the ski and smothering the engine out. Mine was on a 3 inch peice of wet/exhaust hose between the the end of the header and the waterbox. It just burned a hole in it.

Try riding it with the seat off and see if acts any different. That'll let you know if you have an exhaust leak or not

I have tried bypassing the rectifier, clearing the gas vent line, running with the cover off, testing the electrical with an in line spark tester, and sea foam in the intake, all with no help. The spark is consistant while the boat is running fine, and when it is struggling. I don't know where to go next.

I'm thinking the cooling loop is the next thing to check. If you are overheating the engine, it will want to seize up. Overheating can be caused by a lean fuel condition or something wrong with the water cooling system.

Your exhaust and the cooling loop are related. So you should check for any obstructions in the water ports. Remove the hoses to the head and make sure there isn't a huge build up of gunk or corrosion in there.

Obstructions in the exhaust could also be causing the engine to self extinguish - similar to the exhaust leak where it self smothers. The water box should be inspected and the cap (looks like a RAVE) needs to be checked for operation.

I have the same problem. Runs great for 5 minutes, than dies. I measure the compression and the forward cylinder has blow another O ring. Remove the head, fix everything, compression back up to 150, run 5 minutes, and cylinder is back down to 25 and the engine will not run.

What's up?

possable solution

have same machine with same problem. FIXED! Stumped me. Turned out to be the rear exhaust hose(resinator to through hull fitting) was colapsing internally. once the ski warmed up, the rubber inside the hose would seperate and creat a restriction in the exhaust system. funny thing is, the rubber hose looked fine fron the outside, once taken off resinator, very obvoius what was wrong. hope this helps
