1996 Challenger Pump issues

You are missing a piece inside the cone, a white wear washer. No big deal but I would get one in before putting everything back together

What does the wear ring looks like? If you do change it, i would get some new bearings, seals and look at the shaft to make sure it's not worn too much where the bearing is

No metel at the cone and everything looks like it's replaced recently. The wear ring is very shine, the reflection on it is the reason make it looks like big gap. And the shaft looks good too but had no oil.

Also should I put some grease on the shaft boot inside the bilge where I show in the video that has a big play

Im not sure, myself I dont think you should put any grease, but maybe someone else has another opinion

Ok guys the update is the pump shaft bearing is the one make all the noise, so that is being taking care of by the BRP dealer right now. However the carbon seal is finish and need to replace it. Any recommendation on what to buy to replace it.

In my 94 Xp they replaced the carbon seal with something like fitting on the PTO that you can grease as well, should I do the same thing to the 96 challenger and can't be done.

The carrier bearing is fool-proof against cavitation. Downsize is you have to grease it every once in a while so the bearing won't overheat and seize itself to the driveshaft. If it does seize, it might sink your boat in worst case scenario. Some if not all aftermarket ones are assembled with "wrong" kinds of lip seals that won't let excess grease escape, so you might blow the seal out let water in the bearing if not observed. So don't pump too much grease in :D
Carbon seal is "safer" choice and what I've understood you can adjust it a bit for more tighter fit to not allow air from hull to pass to impeller...

Despite negatives I'd go with carrier bearing... there's pretty much no load there so it lasts very long with very little maintenance effort I think. Not sure if you can fit it in your boat, though I think some have retro-fitted the older style carrier bearings in boats that came with carbon seal setup.

Thanks for the info, I decided to go with the carbon ring. Dealer have it for 60$ + tax but I bought the whole kit of eBay for 64$

Four dollar difference,,, I would have gotten the dealers just in case the one off eBay is not an OEM item. Don't get me wrong, I get lots of eBay things. But somethings I stick with good known suppliers.

The dealer have the carbon ring only for 60$ every other item is extra. The one on eBay sure is not oem but will give it a try as it is the whole kit, seal boot and metel bumber and I-rings

Hello you All,
Finally I had the time to write the result.
Seadoo dealer cracked the pump housing while trying to remove the wear ring :).
So they ordered a new housing that fit on 98 challenger.
Now the housing arrived bearing assembled but the impeller stak trek 17-22. Not fitting the housing, touching the impeller seat and not moving so they told they have to order a new stock impeller.
After few hours they called back saying the pump ready we found a solution to replace the thrust bearing with thicker one and now they used my impeller again.

Picked up the pump and installed and changed the carbon seal and seats and went for a test ride.

The boat take lil bit to plan but once started it run ok but yet I still hear the metallic noise from the pump? Any thoughts???

The top speed was about 50-55km on the speedometer. Is that normal?

I replaces the spark plugs with one that recommended in the shop manual and gapped it at 0.22 (the old one came with the boat with NGK platinum that already pre-gapped I think at 0.29.

So any changed should I do the improve the fast plan and top speed.

Also the reverse doesn't work, I engaged it and I see the bucket moved but no revers and the VTS as well not moving as it should be (my reference is my 94 Xp)

Any suggestion would help.

Thanks guys and have a great summer.

im having an issue just like this. did yours crank up at all? mine will stay running but make that same noise.[/

I have no issues at engine level or at least I hope :)

My pump had no oil in only few drops + the carbon ring was bad.
So now it is better then before after pump rebuild and carbon ring replaced.

You probably mean Skat-Trak impeller :)

Is the "metallic sound" heard while driving or idle only?

You should get speed checked by gps, maybe get some app for mobile or use car gps or something... 50-55 kmh sounds very low but the factory speedos are unreliable... mine goes 70kmh, yours should be same and even more i believe

Might be your carbon ring is leaking air to impeller and your still cavitating out of the hole.

Reverse bucket is easy to check while off water... might be somekind of adjusting problem, maybe it doesn't go down enough?
