I'm in the market for a 15-foot SeaDoo and have been looking mostly at 2005+ Sportster 4-strokes.

But I just ran across this Craigslist ad for a 1996 Challenger that got my attention for two reasons: color (not yellow) and price.

I'm kind of up to speed on the later models, but know nothing about the 90s boats. Wonder if you could tell me what to look out for and help me with the basics of these boats. The ad says that the engine is a Rotax 787cc.

Thanks. Here's the ad:

Looks to be in good shape.

The older boats are great. As you know... they are 2-strokes, so you have to deal with oil, and a little smoke. But, if set up properly... the smoke on a seadoo is minimal.

That's a single 110 hp engine (800cc) and is very reliable. But... it is 16 years old. So, before you buy it... take it for a test drive. It should start cold or warm easy... and it should accelerate from a dead stop with authority. Cavitation isn't good, and the pump, and/or driveshaft seal needs serviced.

I know the guy said NADA was $5100... but realistically... they never go for more than about $4k. If it needs work... then the price should be lower. Also... that engine should be showing 150 psi on the compression gauge, so... that should be checked before you buy it. (Low compression is bad)

Also... the guy says "Seating for 5 people". Well.. that's true, but there is a big placard saying it has a 4 person capacity.

Last thing... if the guy won't take you out for a test ride... walk away. Any boat, or water craft can sound OK on the trailer... but it's when you get it in the water is where all the problems will come out.
