I'm looking for a MPEM for my 1995 sportster. P/N 278-000-571. I did the idiotic move of using a battery starter to jump my boat after a top end rebuild. Engine started up right away and ran great on the trailer. put it in the water to do the break-in and got 200 yards from the dock and it DIED. Now I have nothing. No power to the ignition system at all. I can jump the solenoid and the starter engages, engine is free. Any input or leads to a part is appreciated. I have the new diode to repair my MPEM, but am impatient to get this thing back on the water. I will use the colder months to repair and have a spare.

That falls under the category of... Good luck finding one.

The problem is... they haven't been made in a long time, so you have to find one from a boat that's being parted out. BUT... the reason people part out a boat is because either they blew the engine, or the MPEM is roasted.

But, since it's a sportster... if you dont' want to fix your MPEM... you can wire up an MPEM from a 657x PWC.

I guess the best place to start looking is on eBay.

Hey Dr, thanks for the response. Exactly what do you mean by wire in one from a pwc? Do you mean cut and splice wires from that one into my wire harness? I am very capable of this type work but wasn't sure it would recognize a different model. Or can I just wire my ignition system to the battery with an in-line fuse?

Yep. Cut and splice.

The Ski MPEM's aren't exactly the same... but they will work. The only thing you really give up is the neutral safety.
