1995 GTX - replacing wearing ring...need impeller removal tool?

Hi, I have a 1995 GTX and am going to order a new wear ring and replace it when the kit arrives. I've read through several posts on how to do this, and I have downloaded the Seadoo Manual. The kit I'm looking for has the neoprene seal with it, and I'm going to order a bottle of synthetic jet pump oil with it. Question - do I really need the impeller removal tool? If it doesn't make much difference, I won't order it. But if it really will make a difference, I will.

Thanks! Any other tips specific to the 1995 GTX wearing ring replacement would be great.

I have a 1995 and a 1996 GTX. I did the wear ring on the 96 - no problems, really was easy. Then I went on to do the 95 and found the pump was glued on with lots of RTV. Found out this is common. So mine is now at the dealer getting replaced since I gave up on trying to rip the pump off. I'm told you can put a 2x4 across the back of the hull and use a ratchet strap, but I tried connecting a ratchet strap to my bench and snap on tool box only to move them... It was ON there. I gave up.

some folks have been able to push the ring out from the rear with the impeller still installed after putting the pump in the freezer for a few hours. i haven't tried that because i'm sure my wife would kill me if she found a jet pump in there.

the 2x4 across the rear with a ratchet strap should work, just get a razor blade and slice into the RTV as much as you can around the pump/hull surface. mine wasn't that bad, and the neoprene ring was even reusable but the one on my XP was a nightmare, and the pump sticks out too far to use the 2x4 trick.

I changed one with impeller still on. Prop the pump on a couple 4x4's and used a long narrow screw driver to make a few good dents in the wear ring. Be sure not to nick the impeller when you do it. Then I taped on each groove I made around the wear ring until it poped out. It will take a good number of wacks to get it out. Then I set the new one in the freezer for a couple hours, used some soapy water in the pump to slickin it up and placed a short 2x4 over the ring and tapped it in the pump. Spray some wd40 around the ring when ready to start up and it will help the impeller spin.

Thanks for the replies, and I'll read through some of the posts before completing this project. One thing I still wasn't sure of is the method of impeller disconnect from the shaft inside the ski body. Looks like the 2 metals bands around the rubber sleeve need to come off first...then from there it's elementary.

When you pull the pump off the back, it will come right off the driveshaft. sometimes the driveshaft will come out with the pump but you just have to pull on it to get it out. I assume your 95 has the carrier seal and not the carbon seal.
