I bought a 1994 speedster in winter this year and went to take it out this past weekend, but before I put it in the water (thank god) I tried to start it up and see how she ran......but got nothing no noises, beeps, burps or other sounds....Just batteries? I did not have a battery tester up at the Lake so I could'nt test em. Also, the guy I bought it from set it up so you mix the oil with the gas instead of seperate tanks.....was this wise? What kind of oil would be recommended for something like this?? If I remember right, he said a mix ratio of about 40:1....does that sound good to any gearheads? Thanks in advance! Also, any starting, stopping, or running tricks or advice would be helpful as this is my first boat ever!

Not addressing the battery problem because its easy to troubleshoot. If it still doesnt work with good batteries, then post back please. Keep in mind there is a black ground wire that goes from the starboard starter to the battery, jumps across to the other battery, then goes to the grey electrical box.

Use only genuine Sea-Doo oil, never use outboard motor oil or 2-cycle oil bought a boat shops or chain stores. This is not a suggestion, it is mandatory. In fact I suspect the fact that you have to pre-mix oil has something to do with an earlier oil pump failure. Some of the forum members here sell oil as do the vendors.

Warm up your engines thoroughly in the water. Avoid running them out of water if possible, max 30 seconds if you have to.

If you cruise at 4000 rpm you will get pretty good gas mileage, but at full throttle you can only go 1 hour 15 minutes. Tank holds 27 gallons.

If you get weeds in the intake, try backing in circles, alternating power bursts while in reverse.

Here is the recommended oil and fuel specs;
Use High quality low ASH API TC Injector oil.
Do Not use NMMA TC-W, TC-W2 or TC-W3 outboard motor oils or other ash less type 2 cycle oil. Avoid mixing different brands of API TC oil as resulting chemical reaction will cause severe engine damage. Never mix Mineral or synthetics oil together.

Never use fuel containing more than 10 % alcohol,( Methanol or Ethanol) as severe damage will occur. The minimum of 87 octane is recommended for most engines.

For running your seadoo on the hose;
YES, you can hook up the hose to the seadoo and have them run for up to 5 minutes. Connect the hose and start the seadoo. Turn on the water after it is started. Turn off the water, than shut down the seadoo. This way it won't allow water to back flow into the engine through the exhaust due to no back pressure from the engine not running. The bearings and seals on the impeller jet pump are cooled from being in the water. When it is on the trailer it doesn't have that cooling effect so they will get hot after about 5 minutes.
I pre start my seadoo's too, dry before I leave for the launch too. Just for a second or 2 to be sure it will start at launch. Peace of mind is worth lot.

If you get weeds or debris, running in reverse will do nothng...the seadoo engine is a direct drive engine it is always turning the Impeller in the jet drive all the time. The reverse is a "gate" the allows the thrust of the water to divert in the opposite direction while the engine is going in only one direction...so it won't matter if it is reverse or not.

I hope these facts help.

Well....

KK the running in reverse technique has worked for me many times. You are correct in that the impeller doesnt change direction, but running the hull backwards creates eddy currents under the grate which for sure helps pull junk out. The second part, alternate periods of no thrust is equally important, it allows weeds to float free of the intake tunnel, then the reversing period sucks them out. I know it doesnt seem to make sense but it works.

Someone needs to make a drop-gate kit for the early Doos.

Thanks for the info so far. Injector oil can be directly mixed? This I did not know, obviosly I am not very mechanically inclined! Seems like this may be a good spot to learn a thing or 2, especially being new to boats. Now i just need to find a bimini top for it and hopefully she's good!

I had a local canvas company make one for my 200 speedster. It fits like a glove and is good at top speed. They retail like $699.00 from seadoo. I had mine made and installed locally for $425.00...what a deal.
