How's it going, I have a 2002 seadoo xp 951 an recently been having a problem with it losing power and not turning it's normal 7000 rpm.. It will run fine id turn it off or get bucked off the side like a rag doll, get back on put key in and it feels like it's not running to it's full potential nd only turning about 6500 rpm .. Only when I pull lanyard out nd back in will it run right but if I leave it in nd only use start/stop switch it still doesn't run right .. I don't see a carb prob because of it running right most of time, recently cleaned rave valves nd has good compression both cylinders.. Is this an electrical problem or something that's common with these machines ?? Any help would b appreciated stumped right now...thanks

Do a WOT plug chop and take a look at your plugs. It could be early signs of a fuel system issue. Does it have grey fuel lines? If so, they need to be changed regardless. My guess is you're starting to run lean and you caught it before it got bad.

As for electrical, try a new set of plugs, clip the plug wires back 1/4'' and re-install the boots (i like to use a little di-electric grease on them too). Verify good grounds at the coil, check the stator plug. Check the MPEM ground at the front left of the stator connection near the carbs. Repair if necessary.

The color on the plugs looks good a light brown or chocolate color but r very wet.. I change them out every couple or rides and recently cut back the wires nd replaced boots.. All fuel lines were replaced last season.. When it starts running like that I pull the choke nd it just cuts out so I don't think I'm running lean.. Would these machines go into a limp mode having to do with the lanyard?

No. Normally the lanyard or DESS post simply cause the ski to cut right out. Limp mode on the 951 is about 4k rpm. it will bounce off the 4k rev limiter normally due to a bad voltage regulator. Symptoms are very obvious though.

But if your plugs are wet, you may actually be running a tad rich. Take a look at your raves again and make sure the bellows are in good shape. Also back the red adjusters so they are flush with the black cap. That will ensure they both open promptly.

If no luck, then i would inspect the high settings, which should be fully closed on the 951. check and make sure both chokes are fully open as well.

Ok I'll check that thanks for the quick response.. Just checked the low speed adjustment nd they were about almost 2 turns out on the right cylinder and 1 3/4 turns out on the left .. I know these carbs r very sensitive nd should be at 1 1/4 out maybe that will help a little bit

Shouldn't the red caps be turned all the way in on the 951 raves ? Thought only the 787 was a flush setting

All the cap settings do is affect the spring pressure on the rave valves. If you want them to open earlier, you reduce the spring pressure. The 951 its computer controlled, but if you have a leaking bellows or sticking valves, sometimes they won't open fully. By reducing the spring pressure, you're giving them the best chance to open fully. I ride my xp 951 with the caps 1 turn out from fully in. They close crisply and open without lagging. I had them out further but found one of them was staying partially open and created a flat spot when backing off the throttle around 5000 rpm.
