01 XP Bogs Down At Start

I just bought a 01 Xp from a guy that hasn't ran it in a while. First thing i did was to replace the plugs. After running it for a bit the i noticed that is was only idling at 1100 rpm and when I gave it throttle, it just died off. So i pulled the plugs and both were very wet and oily with only a few mins of riding time on them. So I filled up and added carb cleaner to the gas and ran the whole tank out. At the end of the day only one plug was still wet and oily but still had a boggin issue on take off(better than earlier but still there) I can get it to take off by pulling the choke and letting off wait for the pause and give it gas, and once it takes off every thing seems fine any ideas?

Your low speed jet could be a little clogged up and by pulling the choke you are reducing the amount of air going into the motor allowing it to rev up past the low speed jet into the high speed jet. It could be an internal filter aswell that is a little gummed up. Could also be a low speed screw that is a closed just a tad too much as its on idle you said. How long did the ski sit? Did it sit with gas in it? If it did the gas will gum up and block off the jet. Easy to clean yourself if you don't mind working on it.

In the past three years it had not been used much sat a little over a year and a half without being used at all. I took the carbs off last night cleaned everything, both the mag and pto filters inside the carb were gummed up. After putting it all back together and fired it up it idles really fast and without touching the gas it will hit the rev limiter. I'm thinking the throttle adjustment may be a little too tight, any thoughts?

idle adjustment would have to be way off, besides I bet you have an air leak, did you use new gaskets or reuse the old ones?

With the engine not running, check the action of the carbs with the cable disconnected. The carbs should snap back to idle position when you flick it wide open with you fingers. Be sure you have the linkage properly adjusted so the carbs return to idle position. if the carbs won't go back to idle position on their own, the bushings in the throttle valve(Or butterfly) in one or both of the carbs is sticking and need replacing. They will corroded over time. If they don't stick check the linkage and be sure they are both in sync. It might be the throttle cable is bad also. Check that they allow the carbs return to idle.

Let us know how you make out, and if you need more advise let us know.

well we checked everything before putting it all back together. What happened was we forgot to get the throttle jam nut locked before we put everything back on and since we could not reach it without taking everything back off we just tightened it using the adjustment screw thinking it would not move the cable, however after having some time to think about it I'm thinking the throttle butterfly might be held open because of the way we tightened the linkage. could a small air gap lead to the machine hitting the rev limiter?

Only if the throttle valve allow the engine to hit it's peak rpm...the rev limiter kicks in so it won't over rev and blow up. I'd double check everything so you know it is correct, and adjusted properly before you venture out on the water.

well tonights task will be to take everything back off and fix the throttle linkage and put it all back together and see what happens. Thanks for the help will post tomorrow with results.

The first guy said you had an air leak and asked about gaskets. IF you find that the carbs are closing but it still revs up without throttle, do a search for "runaway engine" and read up on why he thinks you have an air leak. Pretty common on our carbed 2-strokes.

if the throttle is not adjusted properly, you can get a runaway situation on the trailer due to a lean condition and the only way to stop the motor is to pull the choke. the thumb throttle should have a little bit of free play in the off position, this is very important.

Thats what I was thinking this mornin, it was late last night and thoughts were running together, but when everything was apart other than the two filters it looked pretty good compression is above 120 on each cylinder and everything is clean, so I knew it had to be a carb problem. Well we're gonna take it all back off and set it right tonight.

on a side note, a buddy messed with the oil injection thinking it was the throttle and now its burning too much oil I think, is there a easy way to set it back to where it was?

yes, align the two marks on the oil injection. the marks are actually small lines but are very small, so use a flashlight and a mirror to make sure they are clean and look closely. that's pretty important.

also noticed the spring on top of one of the RAVE valves is missing, I know this effects performance, could this be part of the original bogging down at start?

Got the throttle problem fixed and set the trailer RPMs to 3000 runs like a sewing machine! Haven't had a chance to put it in the water yet, but it runs and sounds a whole lot better than before. One last question on this machine, at WOT what should the RPMs be?

Ok so I got the seadoo in the water yesterday and it runs a whole lot better than before. However, there is still a small issue with a delayed takeoff and bog at start. and it doesn't matter if you punch the throttle or ease into it. I can pull the choke out and release it then punch it at the same time and it will go, now with that being said I'm thinking that it is hopefully just a lean mixture and not the accelerator pump. Any ideas?

lot of post, so gonna throw out there....go thru carbs yet, if so, you clean the "brass fitting" protruding into carb. The xcellerator pump, will shhot gas thru it, at take off...take airbox off, throw throttle forward and you should see gas squirt, if not, thats your "hesitation'

Yes completely disassembled the carbs and accelerator and cleaned everything. Have not checked to see if gas was shooting out when the throttle is pressed will try that tonight with a mirror. the low end jets i backed out 1.5 turns from bottomed out.
