Have you checked spark on all cylinders when this happens. Could be a trigger or switchbox breaking down under heat.

I have been fighting this same issue with my 2002 Challenger 1800. 25 to 40 mph and the boat pulls hard left but levels out from 40 to 45 mph. Let off the throttle and it darts left. I added Smart Tabs, they helped with planing and porpoising, I even think it rides smoother in rough lake water...

I had exactly this happen on a Merc Sport Jet 175hp, it was the trigger assembly. On page 2A-11 the manual states that if two cylinders on opposite banks lose or have weak spark then suspect the trigger. the troubleshooting guide for this is on page 2A-15 in the manual. Dr. Honda, I appreciate the advise, I have searched around and find an exact match for .015 oversized piston but not a .030 oversized. Where would I locate the correct part number?

I did order the hone and a set of .030 oversize rings. It is worth at least one more try to save this cylinder.

An interesting idea Dr Honda. If I run it with the piston will the exhaust gasses damage my crank or reeds or do I need to block that somehow? Also I was using a cheap spring loaded hone. A cylinder hone like in the link above might work but I have been leaning more towards just re-sleeving it...

Thanks Dr Honda, I was leaning toward using them and just tearing down again when any cylinder's compression falls too low. I got this boat for a song because of the damaged piston. I have the cylinder cleaned up nicely but will have to use an oversize in it as the gap there is over 1mm.
