97 GTX fine tuning after rebuild

Hello Everyone,

A couple of years ago in 2020 I was having trouble with my 97 GTX running correctly. I asked y'all for advice and no matter what I did it simply would not run after warm up. I decided to leave it in the garage all of 2021 until this spring when I felt like tackling the issue again. It ended up being the MPEM.

So while I was getting the engine back in shape, I decided to do a full rebuild and glad I did. I found a bad crank bearing that would have been a problem sooner or later. SInce the rebuild, the engine runs great except for a bog when pinning the throttle from idle to full speed. RPM at the top end is about 6600+.

Here's a list of everything I've done so far:

- Jugs bored out to first oversize
- Rebuilt crank and CB shaft
- Carbs cleaned and rebuilt with Mikuni kits (4 times with the problems I was having).
- Low speed adjusters initially set at 1 turn out and now at 1-1/14 turns out. No real change in idle quality or performance. Engine starts and idles great.
- Hi speed set at 1/2 turn on the PTO and 0 on the Mag. Tried opening each screw an extra 1/8 turn but engine seemed to load up more when accelerating. Changed back to the original settings.
- Popoff set at 36 psi on each carb.
- New Tygon fuel lines.
- Fuel vents cleaned and working.
- Cleaned fuel baffle and inline fuel filter screen.
- New Arieltek MPEM set at -2 degrees of timing per the stamp on the engine case.
- New spark plugs, plug boots, coil, stator and rectifier. Battery charges as it should.
- New battery.
- RAVE's set even with the top of the housing.
- Water valve set to original specs.
- Impeller completely rebuilt with clearance well within spec.

So, my question is, what should I try next to get rid of the bog? I have run about 15 gallons of fuel throught the rebuilt engine and the spark plugs are a nice chocolate brown color with no fouling. Basically, everything is new.

Any advice is appreciated.

A bog,,a lean bog,,,is fuel delivery/starvation,,,could be blocked fuel intake at the baffle,,rare,,,blocked fuel selector,,,common,,,blocked micro filters in the carbs,,,common,,,run a line directly to the carb from the fuel baffle,,,if that clears the problem it’s the fuel selector,,,if not,,,go thru the carbs,,,could be blockages in the carb jets…or the pop off is too high,,common after a rebuild with non OEM carb kits,,,

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I've done or checked all of things you are suggesting. The selector is new also and I've bypassed it with no change as well. Carbs are spotless with new Mikuni kits. Fuel baffle was pulled and cleaned even though there was really nothing plugging it.

Is 36 psi too much on popoff?
