i have two used seadoo gtx that are exhibiting different problems,

machine 1 will run fine with the choke partially out, but will not run above 4000 RPM without choke slightly out
carbs are rebuilt, all fuel lines are replaced... pop off pressure set at 28 psi initially set 1/4 high speed out tied increase high speed screw to increase fuel flow

machine 2 new engine, carbs rebuilt, pop off valves set to 28/30 psi factory setting on both low speed and high speed screws.

both machines have new plugs, coils and wires and new voltage regulators... the maddening thing is that i see similar posts for both problems but no final solution is ever provided so you can't really determine what finally fixed the problem.

so if any person has the solution to these please respond... if you are just kibitzing then please do not respond unless you have solved a similar problem

You could have a number of problems, fuel related. I don't know if I am "kibitizing" whatever that means but I pulled both carbs off two GTXs 5 times each after I rebuilt them. I did much testing on both skis, hence the number of times I pulled the carbs. :) The cool thing is... the changes I made affected both skis in much the same way. My wife's ski wouldn't get over 37mph. After one change it went 27mph. :) The skis were always "Rich"
On the pop-off setting PSI. I read all the posts and opinions. I started at 23 psi both carbs. Went to 26psi, then 33 psi. The skis LIKE 38psi. Both mine were rich and would not accelerate properly.

1. Must use Genuine Mikuni kits.
2. On an unknown ski I always replace the seats and needles and install the correct color spring.
3. Those 3 holes in the top of the carb barrel MUST spray good flow when tested during rebuild.
4 Pop-off with all the Genuine Mikuni parts on those carbs will be around 36-38 PSI

You have have fuel delivery problem, leaking gasket or no gasket on the fuel separator, fuel valve problem, or debris in the fuel baffle in the fuel tank.

I pressure up my fuel system from the carbs back to the tank which tests everything except the baffle. I use line clamps and test leakage on the fuel valve.... about 10psi.

Good Luck !!

Sounds like the carbs on both skis. Engine 1 is definitely not getting enough fuel. I have had my share of weird problems.... I mean weird.

Also, check your rave valves and Water control valve. Those things are sneaky. :)

Sounds like carb problems. There is another issue with the 97 GTX with the motor not reving past 5000, but that one is rave valve related. I'll throw the service bulletin in for that issue for fun.

Since pulling the choke is involved making in making your motor run above 4k then do as stated in the other response and make sure those carbs are done right.

When I made the rave modification to my wife's 1997 her ski really responded. That thing launches now. I did it to my 96 and failed miserably. My fault. :) I need to give it another go.

It could still be carb related from the rebuilds. What worked for me doing a complete resto build up on 2 787 skis (97' GTX and 96' GSX) 1. If you haven't, spend the extra money and purchase genuine OEM kits, go a step further and replace the needle/seats and needle arm. 2. Make sure you have the blk 80 gram springs. 3. Use everything in the kits, orings for the HS/LS needles, etc. 4. Do a pressure check and pop off test. 5. Make sure they are clean, clean, clean, verify all passages are flowing, blow compressed air through them, and verify again. Some people don't recommend, but I even strip the choke/throttle plates/shafts off and clean polish the carb inside. I also mount the carbs on the RV cover on a bench and make sure they're synced dead on. I also replace all the old screws with SS allen screws to ease disassembly later.

Both skis when I rebuilt them with the kits and did the final pop off, I got about 34-35 psi on each carb. I didn't need to do any bending of the needle arm to lower or raise the pop off.

I'd start with the carbs, these skis are finicky, they must be perfect, take the time, don't skimp or short cut and you'll be rewarded.
