Gelcoat source

Over the winter, I have a little body work to do on my 2011 GTI LTD 155, Marina Blue Metallic.

I found the product at Gelcoat.ca, but it is only in Quarts. I sure don't need a quart of gelcoat for a minor repair. Especially at $115 per quart.

Anyone have another source in "repair" quantities?

Yikes, you seem to be right. We've found other gelcoat sources, but you've got to mix the pigment(s) to try to match your color (which can be very difficult). I've even had problems matching the "black" color. There are other manufacturers (like this one in Canada at: http://www.fibertek.ca/gelcoat.htm), but as Gelcote International is the supplier of gelcoat for Sea-Doo, they've probably got the best match for your machine. I suggest calling them up and seeing if they'll ship a smaller amount for you. Good luck.

Thanks, I will call the dealer also - does anyone know if they sell "repair" quantities?

Dave did you happen to try calling Gelcoat.ca to find out if they can do a scratch and repair kit in the color you need?

Looking at various colors for different year models it seems most have the scratch kits available but some only seem to have the quart (or gallon!) kits... I have no idea why that is though. Seems odd to me.

Even the scratch kits have gone up since I last ordered SeaDoo Black for my RXT... looks like it's almost doubled from just a few years ago! Eeeek! :-O

the Gelcoat CA peeps were extremely helpful when I called last week, walked me right through what's needed, what's available, etc...

Good find Jammin! That's not found under the SeaDoo Products listing for the OP's SeaDoo for some reason... however, I think that's just the color paste not an actual kit (so the OP would just need to get some hardener and wet/dry sandpaper separately???).

That is what I expect. No hardener, no thinner, no nothin' but the actual gelcoat material.

I was not able to contact them today, but I will tomorrow and post back the results.

Uh, Oh. Bad news.

I called them today and this product is MARINE blue, a solid color, whereas my 2011 GTI LTD is MARINA blue metallic.

Online, they do not show the Marina Blue Metallic in any size other than Quarts (GI-0717). I spoke with Richard who suggested I call back next week and speak with Gabe, who is off this week. He is the "normal product guy". Richard said he doesn't see why they can't just pour some off into the 225 ML bottle, but that I should call back and Gabe would be able to let me know if they can make this up.

I have to say, I was pretty impressed with them on the phone. Almost instant answer by the operator and a fast transfer to Richard. No Voicemail hell, no automated robot voice - real people.

Very nice change.

So, I will call back next week and see what I can get.

I was impressed with my dealings with them as well I will say the shipping sucks from Canada though for such a small package

Ok, guys. I finally connected with Gabriel at Gelcote International. I learned something new. He tells me that the Metallic gelcoats will "go bad in the bottle" within 30 days. That is, it will begin to gel. He did not have any Marina Blue Metallic in stock and it will take 4 - 6 weeks to get it. That puts us right into Holiday season and that changes my timing.

It is also Unwaxed. I thought if you put Mylar or even Saran Wrap over Unwaxed gelcoat, it would cure. He tells me you really need to go over it with a waxed clear gelcoat as any covering will mess with the flake in the metallic.

So, I will complete the repair with Marine Tex or equivalent and have it ready for final gelcoat. I intend to spray it with a PreVal kit, which Gabriel said is the right thing to do with Metallic.

Don't know if that is new to you, but I sure learned something.

Thanks for the info!

I learned that I'm sure glad mine doesn't have any metallic colors! LOL!

Good luck with your repair project... please do come back and let us know how it turns out!
