What kind of riding do you plan on doing? Do you prefer 2-stroke or the 4-tec engine?

im pretty new (only rode a handful of times on my bros old 97xp). my buddy has a '10 RXP_X and i only rode passenger but the thing seemed like a beast and WAY different than the old xp, so pretty sure the newer rxp's the direction im looking to head in.
*I live in se michigan, so will be riding only later spring/summer months, usually(mi weather haha) may-sept
*Mostly casual riding/zippin around with buddies(like fast, fast is good), maybe some lake on calmer days i live on an island in the detroit river between mi and canada and its attached to lake erie
*Have a budget of 10,000 exactly

ive been looking locally and found these...
1.first one is 06 rxp, 40hrs, usual claims "great conditon, everything works flawless, etc" asking $6,500(no trailer)
2.second one 07 rxp, 75hrs, new "gel battery", again usual claims, asking $6500 as well (no trailer)
*these both are from the same owner (2nd owner) claims he put about 25-30 hrs on since hes owned them
*says he is selling because of seadoo jet boat purchase
*06 has had "washers" replaced?? 07 is stock
Personal note: im kinda leaning towrads the 07 for the stock factor, its newer, and i absolutly love the color scheme/graphics

The "washers" in question are the ceramic washers that are in the early early 09 model and older skis with Super Chargers (SC). The ceramic chips and enters the engine and destroys the engine. I own a GTX and a RXT-X. Both great skis. The GTX is like a Caddy. All the bells and whistles and rides SUPER comfortable. The RXT is like you said, a beast. I love them both. Can't go wrong with either that I own. SC's need rebuilt every 100 hrs unless you do the update kit and then they are good for 200 hrs.

oh jeez, yea those washers sound like a potential problem for SURE. what would these "upgrade kits" kits run and is it worth the cash or maybe i should be looking into a 09 or later? basically i have 10k budget tops (like from ski to trailer to title) how do these 07 215s stack up against the newer 255/60's?
I would buy any EARLY 09 and older and assume that I will spend about 750 to get the update kit and the labor to do the rebuild. The site here does rebuilds at a VERY fair rate and uses genuine Seadoo parts. I need to check the link but I think it is just under 500 dollars.

I have read that most can't tell the difference from the 215 to the 355/260's I own a 255 and LOVE the ski. I have not ridden a 215. As noted above, my GTX is a 155 and for what it is, it is impressive.

ok so that 07 i was looking at basically i should count on putting another 750 into it to ensure performance down the road, as the guy states it has 75 hrs and "runs perfect for him" so do you think his asking 6500 is fair or should i negotiate lower to compensate for the upcoming rebuild (from what you say should be done at 100hrs)? also when i go to look at a few of these (dont wanna jump on the first one i see) what are some tips/things i should look for and ask/be aware of??
First, do NOT buy ANY ski that you don't do a compression test on and that you can't "ride and drive" for at least 30 minutes. If you MUST buy one without doing what I suggested, then you MUST steal the ski. This is kind of like an add saying, "It only needs a starter..."
Ok, ANY ski that has ceramic washers needs to have the SC rebuilt now. Not at 100 hours, but NOW. Once they are replaced, the standard kit allows for a schedule of every 100 hours. The updated kit has a shaft that is now used in the 09 and newer skis. This shaft and a rebuild kit allows for 200 hours.
The dollar amount he is asking is in the right area. But,,, I would for sure try ot get it less and it would be Un-American not to try.. LOL. But seriously, you should be able to easily justify 500 less just because of the washers. He will tell you that the washers are not that much and he will be correct. But,,, you are only 25 hours from a rebuild at this time. Thus, if you are going to open it up to replace the washers, might as well rebuild it.
thank you for the good info that all makes sense. i think i can track down a tester a few of my buddys are familier with outboards and small engines, so i will try and bring someone with a little knowledge along when i check them out. i will deff have the updated kit installed first thing when i purchase along with full fluid n filter change (just so i have a "clean slate" so to say) when i become owner if i purchase an early09 or older. Now what else should i look for/listen for when i go to check one out? what are some good questions to ask and areas of common concern i should note?
If you ask "have the ceramic washers been changed", "Is it an OEM impeller or an aftermarkert?" "Are there any mods?" This kind of thing. He will assume you know your stuff.I would take a flashlight and take a good look at the impeller and the wear ring. The gap from the ring to the impeller should be less than the width of a dime.In most cases, if things look to be in very good shape they normally are. Looks like crap, it normally is. Lift the seat, look in the engine compartment, run your finger on hoses and lines looking for oil and leaks, it will have a closed loop cooling system, (like a car does), take a look at the coolant level and ask when it has been changed. ect ect If you fire it up on the trailer it will rattle as there will be no load on the impeller. Do NOT run the ski for more than about 15 seconds out of the water. It. The engine does not care for that short period, but the carbon seal does.
Forgot to mention. No matter what a seller says, unless they can provide WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION it didn't happen. So if he says "the washers were replaced at 80 hours..." it didn't happen if he can't produce paperwork.
cool thanks alot man those were the kind of answers i was lookin for! i really appreciate your help, and after everything i think i might just save up a little more and try to pick up somethin new or lightly used/preowned '10 or newer. i figure with the hassle and uncertanty and extra cost of having to upgrade the sc i could put the cash toward something newer and not inherit someones potential problems. Now my main question is what do you think i could negotiate at a dealer if i walked in with 10k cash (nice fresh stacks of hundos

In 2011 I bought two new (untitled) skis. I was pricing them out in Ohio which is where I live. I traveled to Kalamazoo Michigan as my g/f was up there for an oill spill that happened. I had won 2 gallons of Polaris oil that I used in my Polaris skis and the dealer happened to be in Kalamazoo MI, so I told him not to ship it to save me cost. Got to the dealer, picked up my oil and left. About a mile out I turned around as I just HAD to price out the skis they had. So, in the end, I bought a 2010 GTX and a 09 RXT-X both with 1 hour on them. I needed a trailer to get them home as well. I paid $9099.99 for the RXT and $10,200 for the GTX. The point to this long post to answer your simple question is, the exact same skis were listed at 8 grand more in Ohio. Granted, that was a retain price but I am certain they would have cost 5 grand more in Ohio than what I got them for in Michigan. I suggest you get online and look for new "old stock". Which is a ski that didn't sell in the year it was built. They will always be cheaper by thousands of dollars.
Believe it was "Leaders" if I am not mistaken. I tried VERY hard to get free life jackets or ANYTHING, but the price was too low for them to give on the free stuff. They sell multiple things and have multiple dealerships. Polaris, Yamaha, Seadoo ect ect. Sleds, Ski's, ATV's. In my case, they bought the inventory of a shop that went out of business.
I assume you are asking how it compares to the RXT or RXP? Just making sure you didn't mean an older 2-stroke XP.
It is the entry ski into the muscle crafts. It has a mix of luxury such as the IBR and still a strong SC'd engine. If you were to have family or kids this is a better ski because of the creature comforts that the RXT/RXP won't have. I think it has a 215 engine where the RXT/RXP have 255/260's.
yea sorry i wasnt specific, but yea rxp/xt. and no family or kids just me cruisin with a cpl buddys that have the rxp and rxt, so im really not worried about the comforts and the water ill usually be riding is like river i dont know how to describe it exactly but some days glass, others mostly weekends when everyone is on the water its choppier
so after more searching ive decided what ever i do purchase will either be new or "leftover", i have not however decided just what what purchase will be lol. i have narrowed it down to a few (not trying to open a can of worms or anything here) but my current options are: GTR, RXPX, VXR, and FZR. just wondering everyones thoughts on these and how they compare as they all have some features im interested in with the main one being power/speed (i will understand the bias asking here obviously) but you guys have been helpful so far, so im just trying to learn and gather good info?
