Battery Maintainer?

FWIW... the main reason I like the Tender Jr and the Optimate is the Quick connect option... its absolutely wonderful.

I connect the cable to the battery permanently, then zip tie the quick connect cord up around the rear of the seat, so when I go to charge, there are no alligator clips, no 10mm bolts, just pop the connector on, plug it into the wall.

This wonderful option should not be overlooked... its fantastic ! If it wasn't for the quick connect, I might have never discovered the Jr., its a HUGE selling point IMO.

Every battery that I own that I do not have direct access to has leads on it with rubber ends. It makes life so much easier. No unbolting he seat of my bike for example.

i have a battery tender plus that Ive had hooked up to my battery for a solid 2 1/2 mo, just checked the voltage and the battery is at 13.7 volts. the floating mode seems to be doing it's job, is it still advisable to give it a rest or just leave it hooked up? it's a gel cell if that makes any difference.

What bike do you have? I have the same thing with my GSXR. Pain in the rear to get to the battery. have to fold the seat ends up to access hidden allen bolts with washers & spacers that can be dropped as well in the process.

The HF one just needs a part replaced inside (potentiometer vs fixed resistor). I can't find the link right now, but I did it on mine and I have had no issues after 2 years. FYI, you void the warranty by "fixing" them.

I just checked the output of my HF unit and it is putting out 13.10 vdc sitting on a charged battery. The datasheet that came with the charger states a max output of 13.20vdc. I'm going to watch mine to see if it changes as it warms up.

By the way, I located an article on doing the modification: http://countryplans.com/smf/index.php?topic=12050.0

I added a Battery Tender Jr. to my Xmas list. More batteries than chargers around here... :-)

Honda VTX-R with the solid cast rims. I rarely ride it at this point. If it is nice out, I try my very best to be on my Ski's. However, I believe I will be moving to a warmer climate mid next year, if so, then I will probably get more miles on it...

In three seasons I put less than 100 miles on it. Didn't t even start it once last year.

Similar story here. Rode mine three times this past summer. Put maybe 50 miles on it. The part that bothers me more is the insurance on this thing is $300 per year & I'm much closer to retirement age than being a teenager. So its because its a GSXR & not a vespa. $100 per ride, I not sure why I keep it.. O-yea, it's then blinding acceleration...... :D

I hear ya,,,

In 7 yrs away from retirement myself. I will be 57 years old and have 43 years of Federal Service...

Maybe i can enjoy my toys then....

I love the bike, and like you I have full coverage all year round...

Maybe someone will steal it and it will all work out.. LOL

Im a believer in the Optimate. Its one of the few with a micro processor inside it, its water resistant if you leave it in the rain, and it has revived many a scrap battery in a junk seadoo.

When I switched I had a couple cheapos and they wouldnt even try to charge batteries the Optimate revived.

Its a good investment if you have a few batteries around.

Can the Optimate be used as a long term maintainer as well? (6+ mos) Its really not that expensive if it can save an otherwise depleted battery. Are there limits to the size battery it can revive?

Yes it will, it just takes a long time. It can't save every battery and typically those batteries it does save aren't usually ones you want to rely on. But as a backup or one to sell with a machine, that's what I want use them for. I just warn the buyer not to rely his life on it... Lol
