ok, so far I think I`ve got the boat registration info down.
Out of state NJ title, my NJ registration card, and NC DL and fill out the paperwork, and PAY...

I can`t find any "real" info about the trailer online.

In NJ, I gave the DMV a notarized bill of sale and they issued me a registration card, done. No title required in NJ.

The wildlife agent does the boat deal, and the NCDMV does the trailer...

For you guys that live in NC and own your boats/trailers, no liens, what is the skinny?

Thanks...

Thanks. The boat registration info I found on the NC web site, however the trailer requirements were unclear, unless I missed something.
There`s got to be someone here from NC who registered their boat and trailer...

Does NC require you to have a trailer license? In KY it's not required to have a license, so registering a trailer is optional, so if your buying out of state all that's needed is a bill of sale on the trailer.

I own the boat and trailer and are transferring the registrations to our new location in NC. Yes, the trailer is required to have registration and plates.

Found this at the NC BMV

You register a trailer just like you register a car, minus, of course, an odometer statement. Complete a title application. Bring it to your nearest DMV office along with a notarized title and proof of insurance for the vehicle that will be pulling the trailer. The exact cost will vary based on your county's tax rate, but expect to pay in the vicinity of $75.

Andy,

Just spoke with my BIL and when he moved from PA to NC he transferred his utility trailer to my parents house from his old house here and I do his renewals online for him and mail him the Reg card and sticker. The hitch with the trailer in NC is you need to pay personal property tax and reg fee every year on it which is more than a reg fee up here, in PA the Registration fee for a trailer tag is $6.00 or 5 years for $30. So we register them for 5 years and he saves money, albeit not enough to retire on, LOL. He bought a boat while in NC and just went to the DMV and did the titles etc... right there. Not sure if it would happen or not but you might have to pay tax on your boat too, hope the wallet ain't too squeaky.

That`s what I`m trying to say, I have NO title for the trailer. In New jersey you needed a notarized bill of sale, the NJ DMV kept the bill of sale and processed me a registration card...

I don`t have a title for the trailer to give to NC DMV...

Hi Dan, yeah I`ve been reading up on that and looks ok for the boat, bc I have a title, the trailer I do not have a title, just a NJ registration which also shows proof of ownership and registration in NJ...

True, they get you for property tax on anything you have here. The trailer cost I think 18.00 a year in NJ, so for a multi year reg in NC, it`s not that far off... and the trailer is 15 years old, so the property tax should be that bad...

I've done it two ways, both ways required a title. So likely they'll create one in the registration process. Find a DMV License plate office. Don't waste your time going to the normal DMV. Those are packed with people and you'll never get out of there. They have separate offices that handle purely registration of plates/vehicles. I have one by my office and it's the greatest thing in the world. I'm in and out in 15 mins. Most likely you'll have to fill out an MVR1( title application http://www.ncdot.gov/download/dmv/VR_MVR1.pdf) pay the title fee, registration fee, taxes, etc. I just did this for a 2 place trailer and it cost me about $80. You'll take that form to the DMV plate office. They'll file it, hand you a plate and registration, and your shiny new NC title will come in the mail in 2 weeks.

If you aren't 100% certain go to one of those plate offices, they'll tell you everything you need and help you fill out the necessary paperwork. Every plate office I've been in has been super helpful and nice. Not like your typical DMV office. They also have notaries there, don't SIGN anything unless you have a notary. It'll cost you a few bucks extra but they can do it all there in just a few mins.

so are you saying you did this without the title in your hand? and the correct dept creating a title for you?

Yup! I've done it without a title. You'll need your NJ registration to prove ownership. Other than that I've done it with a notarized bill of sale and that MVR1 form from previous owner. It's really not as difficult as it seems. NC just makes damn sure they get their money. lol

And yes the plate office is where you want to go. Stay WAY away from the normal DMV. Only go there if you want to brush up on your spanish OR need a new license.

ok, after several calls and several departments, here is the deal. Out of state registration card (NJ), NC DL, and proff of insurance from the pulling vehicle and badda bing!!!

whew...

hahahahah, thanks bro!:thumbsup::cheers:

The Licensing office for the exam was cake, we walked in at the right time, but in a matter of minutes the room filled up with people and the chaos ensued...:lols:

yes, we will go to the plate office and then to wildlife agency for the boat! I see Walmart is an agent! OH BOYYYY!

Thanks suke!

Walmart is only an agent for hunting and fishing licenses. You'll need to go to the actual wildlife agency for the boat. Those folks are normally super nice. The title for my XP was SUPER sketch( weird ownership order, and the person who notarized the title commission had expired by the time I made it to register it). They didn't even bat an eye. In less than a week had my NC title for it. WOOT!
