We had a heck of a day today.

A 44 year old guy drove right into the front door of my house today, just missing one of my daughters by 2 ft.
He apparently had never driven a car before and had someone teaching him.

I will try to describe what happened.
He made a turn at an intersection by our house and clipped a car, panicked, put the throttle to the floor (probably thinking it was the brake), proceeded through the yard across the street running through gardens and shrubs, then came towards my property, jumped 2 curbs, crossing the street, then through our garden, which has a 2ft high flagstone border around it, then hit the back of my pickup, so hard that the truck box dented the cab of the truck. From there he ricocheted off the back of the truck, up my front steps and straight through the front door.

Once he was in the house, his foot was still full throttle on the gas and burning up rubber on the tile floor until we pull him out of the car.

We are counting our blessing tonight and thank full that nobody was hurt.

:o

Glad no one was hurt especially your daughter. Stuff can be fixed or replaced if your daughter or anyone else was injured that would put it in a different light.

I hope the insurance company is not a PITA to deal with, good luck.

Holy smokes! Thank God you guys came out unharmed. It always amazed me when I see these kinds of pics.

Insurance company has been great so far, they had a guy come down within 30 min and an hour later a restoration company had the hole all boarded up. One of my sons was the first one to come down the stairs, the first thing he did was look under the car to see if any one was under it, the guy was still smoking the tires. It's amazing how human instnks kick in with these situatiion

Ya, it was like living in a movie today, just unreal, it took a while for it to sink in that something like that actually just happened.

Certainly would be a shocking and scary event. Glad you are all ok.

WOW, Kicker I just saw this, you hear about this stuff all the time but think it will never happen to you. The important thing is no one was injured or worse. I not a particularly religious person but I do believe in God and he must have been looking out for you and your family. And on a lighter note no SeaDoo's were hurt in this event.

Are y'all able to stay in the house? I think the insurance company will bend over backwards to please, as they will want to avoid a law suit.

Glad no one was hurt. But look on the bright side... now you get to remodel the living room.

When I was a kid... the same thing happened, but the driver came in between the houses, and smashed the back wall of our garage. I was pissed because he took out my train layout.

good thing nobody was hurt, speaking from experience here now, make sure you get some extra monies when home is being repaired .... our last home when we lived on the Hillsborough river got hit like that by a volvo (drunk driver) anyways, firts monies is for drying in your home ( making it safe) looking at pictures, it has to be shored up ... meaning ... can you leave today and feel safe about home not being broken into ??? if not, then you can do this, and they will pay you for it, the night it happened to me, tow truck took car, police left, i asked them wtf ?? they said your on your own ... so, i boarded my house up with plywood, 2x4 s and calked everything up, bout 200.00 in materials, (insurance co payed me 950.00 for this) they said it would have been cheaper than someone else doing it...
then, if you are living there when they do all the work, they will build like a temporary wall, farther out than house, like past side walk, like a room outside house to work in, also, they will give you extra checks in the process for inconveniences, i got 1 check for i think 1500.00, another for 1200.00 and 1 for 800.00, i asked about it, they said inconvenience money ....
also, when they paint that area, make sure they paint adjoining rooms, cause it will not match, also, before i signed off on all the repairs, they gave me 2 additional 5 gallon buckets of paint, bushes and rollers....

and what i mean about additional money when i started talking , is whenever you decide to sell this home now, everything has to be disclosed to buyer -- (everything) and why should it cost you money ? i think my damage was 47,000.00 when it happened to me, and recieved a check for 10 percent of that, so, i was ok with that.....
also, make em fix it all, lanscape, cracked sidewalk, all of it !!!! take alot of pics ...

sound like im pushing too much ??? not at all, that is your home..

agree 100% here, and I'm in the business, granted if the guy's insurance or the owner of the vehicle's (more likely) in many cases will be capped at 50k for property damage, so if its under that, you can feel comfortable that the carrier will be on the hook, vs having to contact your home insurance carrier, so it would be very helpful to know if the PD coverage is 10K, 25K, 50K, 100K, etc.

as far as repairs, you have a couple different directions to go, you can hire a 3rd party to do everything, and you'll have to do very little if nothing yourself, and can expect 100% payment on that, however if you can do some of the work yourself, or sub it out, you can get more than fair return for your time and effort, so much of that has flat rates already built in for a per sq foot charge for drywall, stucco, pain, landscaping, etc and in many cases the rate can be quite generous, making it more than worth your time to do your own work or sub it out with a qualified guy that will work for less than the agreed rate. you should and can probably also expect to get loss of use reimbursement if you can demonstrate that you need to stay at a hotel while repairs are being made (dust, noise, etc). I've advised customers to get a couple of higher rates from a local hotel (that includes kitchen facilities, etc, and settle on a payment for that as well)

don't worry about being pushy, this is a one time event and you'll never hear from that adjuster/carrier again once this is settled so push for everything, its in your best interest. and yes, its not always cut & dry as far as "loss of value" and very much a grey area, but you can certainly have a discussion with the adjuster on that, push hard to stick with the auto adjuster and not your home carrier, unless you find that the auto carrier's coverage will fall short.

Thanks all for the kind comments and advise.

The family has settled down a bit now and we can get focused on the clean up and rebuild. Insurance adjuster came by this morning, they are sending someone to clean up the remaining debris, gas, oil etc and then clean the whole house top to bottom from all the dust. They built a temporary wall last night to seal it off, so we are closed in again.

Glad everyone is OK.

I would strongly consider contacting your homeowners insurance company regardless. They may have to subrogate against the other carrier or party any shortage and the sooner they are made aware, the better.

Glad nobody got hurt. That is the main thing. I work for the fire department. You would be amazed how often this happens. We get a couple of calls a year for cars into houses.

WOW, glad no one was hurt here. How close were you or your wife to the kid?

I'm sure your daughter was terrified of it and will have lifelong night mares about it (wink , wink)
I think a dr visit the first time she wakes up "screaming" will verify it for the insurance comp .(again wink , wink)

OH BTW this isn't the right way to remodel the living room. :)

I also feel sorry for the guy teaching him. Was it a driving school or just a friend helping out?
Usually a driving school car will have 2 sets of brake pedals one for the driver and 1 for the teacher in the pas. seat.

My daughter was the closest, she had to jump behind the couch or the bookcase in the picture would have hit her.

No it wasn't a driving school just a friend teaching him, he is 44 but never drove a car or probably anything else before.

Ya the whole remodeling thing is working out for the best, the guy went through our newest part of the house, we just redid the front entrance last year with tile, hardwood and new french door. It was to bad he didnt go through the kitchen, thats our next project. And to top it off, he missed all the older vehicles and nailed our newest one. Once he hit the Ram it redirected him straight for the front door or he would have landed in the pool.
