Yet another Yellow vs White engine question......

Hi Guys, Do you know if the flywheel housing from a white 580 engine will fit a yellow 580 block? I picked up another a pair of skis that need some work. one is a tired looking 89 that seems to run pretty well. 150psi each side, cylinders look nice using a borescope. The other is a 93 with a scattered engine, but is in nice cosmetic condition. In comparing the two machines, the 93 seems to have quite a few improvements with the electronics, fuel management & drive shaft seal setup.

What I would like to do is put the yellow engine in place of the white. I know based on my forum searches most guys say switch all the electronics & be done with it, however I would like to keep the 93 electronics in place. I noticed the block has some differences & wasn't sure if the white flywheel housing & stator would bolt onto the yellow engine. I assume the flywheel will swap seeing the crankshaft are interchangeable.

Any thoughts?

Carl

Well, I just looked up the gaskets for the flywheel housing, & they are quite different. So, it would appear those won't interchange.
But how about the stators? can I put a 93 white stator on a 89 yellow block? Sure hope so.....

I'll keep searching for info...

Yes the stators will swap. I have put the yellow cover on white motors by drilling and tapping 4 bolts. Not sure about going the other way.

Thank you Matt! Pretty sure I am going to do the swap. I thought it would look cleaner if I could use the white cover, But I suppose I could keep the yellow cover & put some rubber plugs in the extra unused wire holes. Now I just have to make sure the engine is worthy of the efforts.

The yellow electronics are simpler and have a hotter spark than the white engine so don't be afraid of it if the parts are in good shape.

I see what you mean about the white block, just took a peek & the white block has the untapped boss's for the yellow cover.
Looking at the yellow engine, I don't see any extruding boss's for the eight bolts that hold the white cover.

Not too afraid of the 89 ignition, however I think it will take less time to swap over the flywheel & stator, rather than the rest of the electrical. OF coarse then I need to mess with the ignition timing.

Thanks for your help!

Pulled the yellow engine out of the donor ski this morning. I now know why the starter was seized after sitting for a few years. What a mess. That cover was leaking & allowing water into the flywheel housing. Doesn't look the the best sealing system with the plastic cover.
Are they known for leaking? O-ring was in place & all the screws were properly tightened & gaskets in place on the block & starter.

I've seen about 35 percent of them come apart clean as a whistle and the rest be some degree of rusty. I had a bad habit of doing bone-headed things and sinking skis in my first life. It happens.

Do you have to swap the stator to use the white electronics? I'm moving a 93 yellow into a 94 white and I'd like to do the same thing as you....keep my white electronics since I don't have a set of yellow, and I don't want to drop the bucks on a yellow mpem since my white one is fine. So why change stator?

White is a single" " and yellow is a double" " I want to say coil but I know that's not the right word. The yellow will be a five wire like the 657x(hotter spark) and the white 587 a four wire. The timing is almost the same(I think one is 19-21 and the other18-20) so just line the marks up on the stator. When you look them over close you should see a difference in that the yellow motor's electronics having something extra.

So I guess I'm swapping the stator then. Would be easier to make a wiring adaptor if we knew what exactly that different wire did....or maybe not. Not a huge job anyway, just a pull and a gasket. I'd pick up an MPEM and go all yellow but they're not cheap and darned hard to find as well.

It really wasn't too bad. Just have to plug the extra holes. Like matt said there's an extra winding in the yellow stator.
I had thought that the yellow engines ended in 1991? OR is that just the yellow 580's

now I am working on my other 92 & it appears to have a bad MPEM. GO figure...... :(

I read a wiki that said 92 was the last year for yellow, but this was advertised as a 93 and the seller seems very straight so it was likely an early 93 model runner. It's a dual carb, showed my ignorance and thought all the yellows were single so there ya go. At least mine was running well before the crank had the bearings for lunch so I know MPEM is good, as are carbs, yadda. I'll swap stator and go, and then look at rebuilding my original, I just want to get some time in the water this year.
