Okay, I thought I had a clogged impeller and I was somewhat worried about it last weekend. Thanks to Aaron!...I finally reach the conclusion that it was worrying about nothing.

We have had really cool spring weather here in Wisconsin. I kid you not...we were still wearing jackets last week. Lows in the 40s. Next week didn't look better and today's forecase was high 70. I think it actually hit 80. I rearrange my schedule and took the afternoon off. I wanted to watertest the boat and reassure myself. We launch off just fine...off the dock. Wife and I got our system down and was pretty efficient.:) Then we were off...except Jim spun the boat around a bit. I thought we had bump the shore...more on this later.

So we idle out to the deep part of the lake. I gave the helm to my wife to sit back and relax. Once we got past the wake marker, she proceeded to give it throttle. There was no acceleration, the rpm revved, and the boat vibrated. Immediately, my wife let off on it and we looked at each other. WTH! I jump into the seat and give it a try. Same thing...going forward and going back. We were idling...but no power beyond it. Once it got pass 4000 rpm, the vibration hits. What to do?!!...I grab my phone and called Craigmri. Thanks for taking my call, Craig!.:hurray: He really tried to troubleshoot the problem. But it was evident that the day out on the lake was over!

So we brought it back to the ramp and we got the boat out of the water. By the way, I am getting better at this part of it. Got a tip about leaving my tailgate up while backing it up so I can actually see the trailer-san-boat! As soon as I went under....I figured out the problem!! You will never guess! Craig guessed that I ran over a dinosaur bone...I would have thought I got another pile of weed. Alas no...that is not my luck! There it is a freaking nylon strap with a rubber coated metal S hook in my port impeller intake!!!! Some A$$*(&^ broke his tie-down strap so he dropped it in the water by the ramp. When I thought I had hit the shore, my wife and I are guessing it was when the impeller sucked up the strap.

We tried to get it out but it was pretty much stuck there and we had nothing out on the ramp. So we drove it a mile home. After getting some good flashlights, we can see that it was lodge pretty good. I can see that my impeller had damage.

So, off to the dealer I went. (Yes, I know Aaron!) I have been researching the dealers nearby and picked Nielsen's Motorsport. They are listed as a 'Premiere Service Provider'. So we drove there and dropped the boat off. I figured that we would have to leave the boat indefinitely. Didn't feel too bad since the weather for the weekend and the following isn't too promising....drop in temp and lotsa rain! Not so! No sooner than I talked to a guy, he had someone jump right to it! I am standing them in awe as two guys ran over to my boat and started working on it. Car dealers don't even do this! They even told me that if there is no damage, we could be back on the water in a few. He went under and removed the strap and did an inspection. They basically said that the wear ring is damage and need to be replaced. I know that they are going to have to replace the impeller as well. So anywho, I asked them...if they will call me when they have it ready for me next week. The service guy was like,"Next week?! We should have it ready for you tomorrow!" We will call you tomorrow and let you know when we can pick it up! Holy schnike! Sorry guys, I am somewhat impressed!:coolgleam:

Will update when I get it back! The kids, coming home, remarked about the empty bay in the garage...feels weird coming home without the boat!...I know, kids..I know!:grouphug:

That sucks to hear that you had to cut your boat ride short, but at least you found someone who seems to want the work and is interested in taking care of the customer.

Most boat dealers around here this time of year would have told you to leave the boat and call back in a month to see is they had looked at it yet. :ack:

Be sure to give us a ride review after you get back on the water and let us know what they end up charging for the job. And don't feel to bad about the wear ring, if you had a prop it could be a lot worse. My brother hit a rock on his very first outing with his first boat and it ended up costing him almost twenty five hundred by the time it was out of the shop (outboard motor).

Aaron:cheers:

Jim,

Like I said, we all will go through this....Its not a matter of "if"....more a matter of "when".

I envy you for having a dealer that is so responsive.

You may remember my brother-in-law has that 55' Searay. Last night after we got off the phone I got a call from him and my sister. They were taking the boat on a trip to the Keys. While in the ICW near Venice they hit bottom and did some running gear damage. They limped to a nearby yacht service center and will hopefully get it looked at today. We are hoping its just a prop as he carrys two spares. If its more than that he's looking at a lost vacation. BTW, the fee just to lift him out of the water is like $750!!!!!!!!

Don't those things have radar or depth finders?

Craig,

Thanks again for your help yesterday!! As I ponder the event last night, I can say that it is what it is...part of ownership. Like Aaaron said, a prop could have been equally if not more expensive to repair. Given my learning curve with boating, the odd is probably I would have done something stupid by now!:hat:

I would think with a 55' Searay, that it has equipment to try to prevent this type of event. Sonar, Radar, etc?!! Man! $750 just haul them out of the water?!! At least they got to a place...can't imagine a tow on a boat that size!:svengo:

While I was getting acquainted with my impeller intake, I did notice the grate and it really isn't that substantial. It is just 2 bars. Would a better design prevented what happened to me or, for that matter, to reduce the type of indicdent? How about a cross grate? Just a thought!

Boat is fixed!

Just got the call that it is done...I am getting ready to leave and pick it up. Will post on the damage and outcome!:coolgleam:

Grate

Jim,

Grate designs have varied over the years. Its really a crap shoot. True, if you had a grate design that had more tines in it it may stop some larger items from being sucked in but when the first clump of weeds get sucked in your stopped up. With what you have now most weeds will get mulched up and spit out.

Use your depth finder and when your in less than 2 feet of water pull the key.

Craig

Nielsen's Motorsport has my business!!

Got there and everything was done.

Total Damage: $301.49.

1 Wear Ring $59.50
Thermalube Grease $ 8.99
Labor 2.5 hours $217.50
Shop Supplies $10.00
Plus tax..

They were able to repair the impeller. Dropped it off about 4:20 pm Friday afternoon. Got the call it was ready at 11:45 am this morning. I don't know if the cost is reasonable or unreasonable...but timely matter it was done...it was worth it!!!

Looking at the bright side...I did get my boat wet today....it is 58 degree and raining!:seeya: Just gotta be patient and wait until the next time we are in the water!

Jim,

Glad you got the boat back in record time!!!!! In the time they fixed your boat my dealer wouldnt have began the paperwork yet

Craig

That is great news Jim.

Three hundred dollars sounds like a good price for the quick service. Glad to hear you found one of the good dealers. Let us know how your next water test goes.

Aaron:cheers:

I had a similar set of circumstances here in Southern Ontario, with a similar experience at the shop.
I dropped it off yesterday morning with a damaged wear-ring, minimal damage to the impeller. They looked at it by the afternoon and will be ready today or tomorrow. For about $200. (1.5 hrs labor on impeller, wear ring).

I think its about time we all find dealers that provide better service and stop being loyal to those who don't... Unfortunately, Marine dealers are usually about convenience to boaters because of the limitation in reaching one nearby. I just think a week or a month to get a boat back during our short seasons in this part of the world is unacceptable. If its a seasonal business, you need to work your pants off during the season!

btw, here's the wear ring that was replaced

Back in the saddle again!

:cheers:Got the U-boat back in the water. Run so much better without a strap in the impeller! Ran great!

Holy schnike! There was a regular Seadoo parade out there today. There were Two 2006/2007 Challenger 180SE out on the lake as well as the maroon Utopia 185. We almost outnumber the prop boats....nay...there were plenty!:cheers::cheers:

Uuuugh!

Your killin' me here bro! This is payback. I deserve this for making ya'lls lives miserable all winter long. OMG I promise never to bust you guyz balls any more.

I'm dyin' heeeeeeere(insert my NY speech imetiment).

Etiquette questions....

Sorry Craig...It's finally boating season in WI! We finally got good weather up here. High 70's...even though it is still 50's in the evening....that must be why people have summer home up here!

Okay, the question is about proximity to another boat. So, we were pulling up anchor and getting ready to go. My buddy had walked the boat away from the shallow area and was having trouble getting the swim ladder back in place. I started to drift close to the another boat. We were getting close...but not that close to be super concern. The dude was giving me the evil eyes.:ack:...When we were about 50 feet away, I fired up my engine and idle away from him. I kid you not...until we were underway, he was staring at me with the evil eyes!!. I figure it was fine for him to be concern as I was drifting close...but it wasn't like he was in any danger. I would be a bit more concern about my boat than his 80's 18 foot bowrider. Was I wrong?...or is he just another stupid FIB?

Maroon Utopia???????

All I have ever seen is the white. Next time you run into that boat take a picture of it. Did you talk to the person, and find anything out about it?

About the proximity of the other boat, unless you came within inches I wouldn't worry about it. Some people are too sensitive. Although if anyone ever hit my my boat they would never find the body.......

Aaron:cheers:

Jim, Aarons right. 50'???? You should come to Tampa for Gasparilla. Thousands of boats all withing a couple of feet of each other throwing beads and idling around......That guy was waaaay to sensative.

Craig

No problemo!

I should have describe it better. It is still an off white boat but has maroon colors as opposed to the black/sand/etc. I will get a picture of it next time I am out.

The guy did seem like a bit of a jerk. I didn't care much...as I was leaving. But I thought I asked anyways.

Didn't get a chance to chat up any of the Seadoo Boats. One was anchored and I walked by hoping to strike up a conversation...but he was in his own world. I was checking to see if it was a new boat...perhaps the one from Cedarburg Motorsport...It would be ironic....but it looked older. So did the other 180. I have to admit..the body style of the Challenger are sharp. If they made a 20 footer...like the Utopia...I would really have to think about that!!!:agree:
