Windows 8.1

Well I just upgraded the operating system from Windows 8.0 to 8.1. I like 8.1 much better than 8.0, one problem I had was with Norton, it just doesn't work with 8.1. I uninstalled Norton and now I'm only running windows defender. Microsoft has upgraded windows defender in the 8.1 upgrade and according to MS defender is all you need. So far so good.

Griz, if windows 8 is new to you download "Classic Shell", it's a free program which gives you the start menu you had in Windows 7, or even XP. Once you get use to the new system you can uninstall classic shell, or just keep it, it's up to you.

so, if i download this, the start page , may actually look like a picture i might have as a background, and i can put all my shortcuts up, and actually have a toolbar i'm familiar with ?? and i usually download avg for security ... actually there is an avgfree security that for like the last 7 or 8 years i've used without a problem ..

Yep, your desktop will look very much like Windows 7, and you can toggle back to the apps. with the windows key on your keyboard. When I got my laptop it had windows 7 installed with a free upgrade to 8.0, I have often thought about going back to 7, but being the IT Director at work I thought I should learn the new system.

I got rid of Norton as it seems to take over and slow the computer down to much.

I use Kaspersky and absolutely love it. You can use the same license for three computers.

It runs very passively as far as being able to see how it affects the computer but stops any access dead.

I strongly recommend it.

very nice lou, downloaded "Classic Shell' and worked real well, haven't played with it to much, but its just like you said, hit the windows key, boom, you have a classic 7 or vista looking desktop, where you can do stuff your used to, but also i been plying around with 8.1, and it will be a learning curve, classic 7 will work for my work use, i have to upload wi - tech , thats chryslers wireless diagnostic system, so it will communicate with wireless pods we hook up to vehicles with, and also link to chrysler via internet dealerconnect.com to flash program modules in vehicles, download some to usb thumb drives, etc, etc..... all i have to do is hit windows key on keyboard, and its like windows 7 or vista ..... i'm so surprised microsoft hasn't incorporated it into the new pc's , it would be a good selling factor that you could have like 2 pc's in 1 .......thanks again for the heads up lou ......

I'm surprised they haven't, it was supposed to be incorporated in the Windows 8.1 upgrade but I guess it didn't make it. Windows 8.1 does have a start button but all I can tell it does is the same thing the windows button on the keyboard.

i hit the windows key when i'm in 8.1 to go to 7.0, and then on the right side of windows 7.0 , if you go to the top right corner, the toolbar lights up, and if you hit that start button with the pointer, you go back to 8.1 ....

also, just tried, and on 8.1 if you scroll down the right side tool bar and click on start, it switches to 7.0 and visa versa ... from 7.0 back to 8.1 ......... will have to play around and see what else it can do ...

Do you get the start button back in 8.1?

I'm not sure specifically, I actually JUST got asked by my laptop if I wanted to upgrade to 8.1 and I said "no" at least for now.

but circling back to the start button.

there is a company called stardock.com they sell for $5 a program called Start8 its WONDERFUL

gives you back your start button on the desktop, so you can use the start button just like you did in win7 (and all other versions)

I've been using win8 on 2 different laptops, and I rarely if ever go to the UI mode, I always use desktop mode, and Start8 is a wonderful addon, I rarely if ever buy software, but IMO for win8, Start8 is a MUST. Best $5 I ever spent !!!!

I don't know anything about the classic shell, but seems like the same idea, (I kind of think UI mode is stupid, I don't see the advantage of it at all)

Well, ya, well sorta. As far as I can tell all the new START button does is toggle back and forth between the desktop and the apps screen, no menus, it just duplicates the function of the windows key on the keyboard. MS missed the boat on this one, won't be the first or last time.

yip, when I first bought my win8 laptop I was totally baffled over the fact that they removed that button, I just didn't see why they'd take something away a function that I used MORE than any other function on the computer... what the hell ?

on a related note I still get calls from people that switch to MS office 07 or newer and they say... "where the hell is the File/print option" and i just laff and tell them to click the little squiggly thing, same confusion, why remove the thing we use the MOST ?

I run Win 8.0 and now 8.1 it took a while to get used to but once I got it I liked it quite a bit more than 7. I do have two monitors though so one is showing the Desktop at all times.
