Guys, I'm new to the seadoo world but it seems to me that a metal wear ring would be the ticket?

Is there any reason why it's plastic -other than it wears-out easier?

As mentioned in another post, Yamaha sells Stainless rings for thier boats, I have half a mind to get some made for the seadoo by modeling it from a new plasitc one.

Are the drive shafts to the impellers on some sort of clutch? if so then anything devistating that may enter the tube and stop rotation would shear the rotating components if the clutch is working correctly.

Here is the deal as told by my sea doo mechanic. They make a plastic one because when you suck debris thruogh the intake the plastic ring would be the place where the damage from a rock, sand, etc... would occur. This is so you only damage the cheap part instead of damaging the costly impeller. He was telling me that you replace more impellers on yamaha than you do wear rings. Hence the reason why yamaha now makes a plastic wear ring.

The price of a wear ring is like $45.00 the jet pump $250.00 and the impeller can cost as much as $250.00. It is much cheaper to replace the wear ring than those expensive parts.
