Mercury 210- starter was acting up [bendix not engaging] so I took the starter out for a cleaning and lube simple right?...

Reinstalled and now its turning backwards- WIRING IS CORRECT! Even took a picture before taking it out to be sure. had an old starter and put that in with same wiring and it turns correct.

My thought is the cylinder that slides over the windings is on "upside down"? Thoughts?

Your brush assembly is in backwards?? Don't know if that's possible... but it's the only thing that can make the motor spin the other way.

DC starter motors are all wound in series, you can make a starter run backwards simply by connecting the brushes backwards, reversing the polarity of the armature relative to the field there is no other way to make it happen.

I don't know if it's possible with mercs. but it certainly is with Rotax starters, turn the brush assembly end of the starter 180 degrees. Don't ask me how I know.

Kevin, I guess you made it to Atlanta, you do know you can forget about the forum for a couple of hours and visit with you family.

One hour out still. LOL. Been stopping every 100 miles. Checking tire, hub, and rim temperature. Greased them twice. All going well.

Very interesting! It was [and still is!] driving me crazy!

Without installing how can I bench test? Bottom bolt is the negative lead but the positive goes....????

THANK YOU ALL for the info- where the heck would we all be without the trusty internet for answers?!

Place the starter in a vice, use a set of jumper cables, the starter case is neg. positive goes to the pos. on the starter the lead that goes to the brushes.
