Why does...

Why do the RPM's drop from 6700 to 4800 after I hit a wave? Once I hit the wave and land back on the surface the maintenance light comes on and that's when the RPM's drop. After that I can't get it to go above 4800 unless I shut off the ski and turn it back on. It also seems like it missfires after hitting the wave as well. I have replaced the spark plugs. Any thoughts? I would assume a wire of some sort but don't know where to start or what to look for.

Thanks!

If you're getting airborne the pump is sucking air and over revving, the rev limiter is kicking in.

Anyone else have an idea???

My XP did some wierd stuff when jumping waves, and for an entire season I thought it was electrical. Like you said, it felt like a wire was moving when I jumped or something.

Also swapped plugs thinking something was wrong there.

Mine would run fine for a while (primarily used to jump waves, otherwise I "surfed" the waves with it). Then about an hour or so into the session, it would jump and when I landed, it would just lose it's power and I would have to limp around and mess with the gas to keep it alive, then it may or may not revive itself. Sometimes I would just limp it to shore and call it a day. THen it would run fine next time out.

After a while, I noticed that it would revive if I choked it (primed it in my case) and this all happened only after I had drained the tank to about half a tank of gas. At this point, I started assuming something to do with the fuel system, like maybe fuel pump or something. But still no idea why only when it was jumped.

Long story is getting longer, sorry...

Anyway, the following season early on, I went through the carbs, fuel lines, filters, etc. Still did it.

Then I started to focus on the fuel tank and baffle, but no fix.

I noticed that my fuel selector switch was corroded so I cleaned it out and popped it back in, but figured I would replace it so ordered a new one. Still did it.

New selector switch and VOILA fixed!!!

I guess when it got below half a tank, the splashing around was letting air into the system or otherwise losing fuel pressure, maybe getting air bubble at the baffle, or something. Never quite figured it out, but regardless, it was the fuel selector switch.

Moral of story: Don't get stuck thinking it is electrical even though it FEELS like it HAS to be electrical.

Hope your fix is a easy as mine, but you don't end up doing all the other attempted fixes that weren't the solution. It may not be the fuel selector switch on yours, but you might want to pop yours off and inspect it and if it looks corroded, try swapping it out before you do a bunch of other stuff.

If your maintenance light is coming on... that's the reason why it's dropping to 4800 rpm, and it feels like a miss. (It's going into limp mode)

Why is the real question.

Since it's a DI... I would say that it needs to go to a dealer, and have the codes read out. That will tell you exactly what tripped the system.

The diagnostic in the injected skis is very cool... but they should have made it easier for the owner to read all the codes.

Thanks for the help guys, it is in fact the DI. Hopefully nothing major. Would low compression cause this as well?

probably not low compression because you say you can shut it off after the mishap and then it returns to normal. low compression would be noticed 24/7. definitely get that code checked out because that's where the problem is.

Thanks for everyone's suggestion. Sorry I haven't replied. I went on vacation. I was wondering if there is a way to pull the codes off ski myself? I have a 2001 RX DI.

You can try to hold the "Set" button for more than 2 seconds... but if the light is going out, you probably need to have a dealer read out what is in memory.
