After having issues with my Sportster 1800 not wanting to turn over (overheating the starter) I've found out that the starter couldn't overcome the pressure caused by the extra oil leaking into the cylinder(s). After searching the forum I've read several posts about pinching off the oil hose during extended down times. My question is which oil hose is it I'm suppose to pinch off, the hose coming from the sensor assembly that tees off to both engines or the hose that Y's off from the bottom of the oil reservoir and leads to the inline oil filters?

Thanks for the help

I would just pinch off the main feed from the oil tank. It sounds like you have bad crank seals, is it in both engines? If just one engine you could just pinch the oil line to that engine. You do know that this is just a temporary fix.

i have a 1999 challenger with this problem on one of the twin 787's, there is three oil lines going to each motor.one to the injection pump, one to the rotary valve shaft in the crankcase, and one is the return line to the resevior. you must pinch both the one to the rotary valve shaft and the return line, (the one with the filter is the one to the injection pump, it is hard to trace them by sight. i had to feel and pull to trace mine out) pinch them as close to the engine as you can. and don't forget to remove them when you do go out and ride. i put a tag on the steering wheel when my pinchers are on. the past few weeks i have been using a different technique to tackle this issue, (don't laugh) but instead of the pinchers or drenching towels over the plug holes, i pull the spark plug and put the shop-vac hose over the plug hole, turn on the shop-vac,crank over the motor for a few short bursts and it sucks out all the oil. quick and easy. but it will probably wreck my shop-vac and i do this at the house before going to the lake, not realy practical at the dock.

has anyone ever put an inline valve on on oil line? if so , what is the best type of valve with a weak gravity line? this would be much easier than pinchers. the valve would have to turn easily as not to pull it out of the line when opening/closing.

Thanks Lou and 1800, after posting this question I went back to searching the forum and found where you (1800chall) and Dr Honda were discussing your boat. I went back to my shop manual and realized which lines you two were talking about. Thanks for confirming it...

Lou,
So far it only appears to happen on the port engine, the starboard engine turns over with no issues other than some smoking. Before I take the sportster out this weekend I'll pull the plugs back out, suck out any possible build up and pre start/warm up both engines before I have to pay another launch fee...
