When in doubt, PLEASE USE A SPOTTER

My son and I were in our legally parked van in a plaza parking lot talking about his day at college while my dear wife and youngest daughter were in a Canadian Tire Store (for those in America, picture a cross between an autoparts store, tool store & Walmart) looking for some Christmas items.

I notice a vehicle beside me cutting diagonally through a row of parked cars. I had no worries about this scenario until I saw a boat appear in my side mirror getting closer. I hit my horn, but too late!

Bang!

Then, the driver of this vehicle hits his gas pedal to pull his trailer free of my parked van pulling my van forward almost a foot and ripping a hole in the left rear corner of my bumper cover. As I exit my vehicle, I notice this person is not going to stop and is about to hit the car in front of me - diagonally one to the left, so jumped out of my van and I banged rather urgently on their back right quater glass to STOP a second hit and a possible run.

Almost 2 decades accident free streak comes crashing to an end and now so does my vehicle's trade in value.

If you are towing something (anything) in a parking lot and you try to turn between rows of legally parked vehicles rather than turn at the end of row and you start your turn - for the love of boating, PLEASE USE A SPOTTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or if your trailer hangs up on something (anything), don't push the gas pedal harder to un-hang it!!!!!!!!!

How difficult is it to understand those concepts?

The only not so bad thing is there was NO harm to his boat, since the boat trailer was slightly wider than his boat it was carrying, but not for his lack of trying.

Since a pic is worth a thousand words, here is where I stopped him inches short from a second hit but you get the picture. Picture.jpg

Well that sucks! I know around me you will get ticketed for cutting thru rows of parking spaces. So, I'll assume it's pretty much illegal.

He stopped because I made him stop.
787X, no that was previous unrepaired damage to his vehicle.

We live in a "no fault insurance" province which means I have to pay my full insurance deductable if he left the scene (even if it was 100% NOT my fault) OR I have to pay 2/3 of my deductable if he has no insurnace and still not my fault.

Given the damage on his vehicle and now mine is why I insisted on a police officer attending the scene for an incident # as it was cause to run his licence, registration and insurance.
ON edit - it was cause to run / confirm both of our licenses, registrations and insurance information.

Visible damage to my minivan is a hole ripped in the rear and side of the rear bumper cover, crushed bumper absorber and mounting brackets. Non visible damage is the van pushed forward while transmission in park by his boat trailer as he gunned his Journey moving forward to complete his turn.
My estimates run around $1500 - $1600 just for the bumper repair and paint which in Ontario won't trigger a police report - just an incident # since the parking lot was private property.

The owner of the VW thanked me for stopping him when I did as you can tell from the pic that the boat trailer would not have cleared his car's front bumper, right headlight or right fender either.

Mike.

I know this is not boating related but my wife saw this at the Peace Bridge on Thursday.
It looks like a proffesional driver suffers from the same type of damage done by the trailer of another misguided proffesional who wanted to cut the wrong way through a row of properly parked trucks. His damage was much more significant!

The only thing I see there that is wrong is the use of "professional driver", lol.
