what to do... water in engine 95 sporster 657x

So... my engine took on water somehow, and it may have been my fault.

while on the water, it fired up and then eventually stalled and couldn't be started...

felt the plugs and found one cylinder not firing at all, and when I pulled the plug and tried to fire the engine, there was water spewing out, and even out of my carbs :P

I tried to pull the plugs and spin as much water out of the engine but to no avail...

worse part is, I accidentally dropped a bolt into the engine bottom end through on one of the ports while I was unbolting the carb... arg


I'm thinking the engine is eff'd now... so its likely I need to get a new core

whats the recommendations guys? go to SBT?
 
Fish the bolt out. If your lucky, its against the RV. How'd you manage to get so much water in there? Get it out, get bolt, and fire it up

brought it to a BRP certified mech...

had to pull out the motor and found that the bolt wasn't acctually in the block or caught in the RV, and that it was just sitting there under it all (yay 5 hours of labor) but it was insurance I needed

hes going to put it back in and I found out that the water got into the engine because I managed to fill the gas tank full of water, thinking that the engine was to be flushed out using the hole on the side of the boat, only to find out that was acctualy the breather... ugh

so... he's going to reassemble, syphon out all the water, and turn it over to check for compression.

so far he believes there are no corrosion risks, and if it fires, we'll check compression and see if its sufficient to "use", thank god its not a 4 stroke right?

good news, is that I had a bit of an oil leak and he will make sure everything bottom up is reconnected properly.

if the compression is bad, I'll order a top end rebuild kit, but before that he'll take off the cylinder heads to look at the crank to see if its worth while, or just order a long block from SBT.
 
Do the compression check before the motor is installed again. You will be paying double labor if he installs the motor, does a compression check only to find out that it's low and then remove the motor again.

not sure there is a way to check the compression without it being supplied to spark gas/oil
 
You don't need to start it to do a compression check. Just bolt up the starter and jump it.
 
damn you're right...

well anyways, the mechanic did put everything back together, adjusted the oil pump and ran a compression test of where its at 137 on both hot and cold... I assume that's not "terrible" but in time I should get a long block
 
One more thing guys...

Being that my engine had water for some time (a bit under a week)... likely some corrosion occured

The oil injection is running well, but would it hurt to throw some more oil into the tank, and run the engine at low RPMs for a few hours just to wash the rush out?

luck, when can I get some?

so I threw in about 150 ml into 12 gallons of premium fuel to get the ratio to about 30:1, which was recommended by a few techs

Though the compression is 137/136 on land, I can't keep the thing running in the water...

a couple times having to be towed in by some passerbyers which is always nice.

So I decide I'll try to crank it over and have a look closer to shore, but still about waiste deep to see why it won't stay running... when sure enough a big ass wave boat "super air nautique" sends my boat, which happened to be idling right up in the shallows and sucks up a whole pile of rocks, jamming it tight.

I was lucky enough to be able to free the rock that stalled the motor by using a long handled screwdriver, but my impellers and wear rings are now worse for wear GRRRR

anyways, put her back in the water... and same crap...

pull the plugs, and sure enough they are fouled, and won't even light and are whiteish which means there must still be water in the fuel lines or the fuel itself (even though I had a tech syphon it all from the reserve...)

god damnit, not sure what to do next.

was told to do this: hook up the rabbit ears to run the engine with a garden hose... and keep running it until all the fuel is gone, which means keep some BR8ES plugs around and swap them when they foul...

now how do I do this without pissing off all my neighbors :P

Also, what impellers do ya'll recommend?
 
I don't think you are supposed to run on hose for too long. There are parts of the drive that are lubricate or cooled by the water running through the jet. If your intent is to use all the gas why don't you siphon it?

already siphoned out the entire tank through the reserve....

also being 2 stroke it is far too loud... :(

I was told thhough, if you ran a hose just under the grate (avoiding the driveshaft and impeller) you should be able to keep the seals cool, as well as running the rabbit ears for the engine

Anyways, took it out to a calm lake and tried to fire it up... still have fuel/water symptoms but at least now it'll run for 5 minutes then putter away when fuel gets sucked in

problem is, thats not a "good" thing even on a 2 stroke, as I could really hurt the piston rings... but I just don't know any other way to siphon out any more water

any ideas on better ways to drain the oil?

Should I add pure alcohol or seafoam?
 
I use seafoam in my engine. everyone says its great. I have no evidence it does anything. I understand that using fuel with ethanol is ok for having water pass though the engine but I think there is something you have to do once you start using it. cant remember exactly.

Yay, so siphoned gas out for the 3rd time and its the Charm... no sign of rough idle, was smoking right and was reving..

NOW, I'm overheating as I noticed at WOT for a couple minutes, no piss stream or very little water was coming out...

Open the bildge and it was "smoking" and the head was so hot, that I turned the engine right off, and pourd some water on top to try to get it down and the water was evaporating.

My mechanic while tearing down the engine had rebuild the exhaust gasket with just a liquid gasket... I'm hoping its not clogged.

What is your recommended procedure to understand where the clog is...

being this is a 95... I'm not sure there is a heat sensor, so I didn't hear any beeps.... but there was smoking coming out of the engine compartment, so thats not good right?

damnit, next I'm going to get a full rebuild with the gasket kit and a full tear down.

at least my jet is in good shape.
