What should the rpms be at wot on a merc 240 efi motor?

Mines a 2001 challenger 2000 and I have seemed to have gotten the bugs worked out of it. But I could have swore I hit 6 rpms before taking it to the shop to get it fixed. Now I've got it back and it hits 5500-5600 at wot. That said I hit 52 m ph before these issues and now it goes 49mph at the 5500 mark. The issue the shop found was a bunch of crud in my screen of my vts tank. Thoughts?

Yep... 5500~5600 is low. BUT... 49 mph is OK. So... before assuming anything... you need to check the RPM's with a real tach. Also... try driving around with the deck lid up, or the vent fan running. If you have a little exhaust leak... it will cause the RPM's to sag. ALSO... is it hot and/or very humid? That will cause RPM's to drop.

When's the last time you changed the spark plugs? If they are starting to foul, you will loose some RPM's.

Thanks Murph.....
Tony, It has been every hot and muggy lately when I've taken it out....I'll try the blower thing to see if that helps (but I wouldn't put any money on it...lol) I changed the plugs earlier last month when I started having problems

OK...

If the blower doesn't help... then I would double check the ignition timing. AND... make sure the throttle is actually opening all the way. Who knows... something could have fallen into the control handles, and is keeping it from opening all the way. BUT... I would check at the engine end.
