Looking at 2 jet skis. One is a 1996 Seadoo XP in good condition, new SS impeller,VTS for 1400. The other is a 1998 Seadoo SPX good condition, no known problems for 1800. Both have trailers and are well taken care of. I assume i want to check the compression and buy the one that has a even 150 psi compression in each cylinder.

what motor does the 98 spx have in it i havn't really looked at them much but i have a 96 xp and it has the hull of choice for most riders it can turn on a dime, jump like crazy, and with the 787 motor it literaly jumps out of the water when you gas it the hole shot is crazy, but if your looking to ride someone with you it gets difficult.. you just need to gas it every time your about to flip over haha but me and my girl have fun on it it just doesn't have all the goodies the newer skis have and its not the size of a mack truck like the new ones but it with 110hp stock it will deffinetly smoke a lot of skis out of the hole... the new supercharged ones might catch up but when you hit a corner they will be like what the F*** haha but i don't know much about a 98 spx...x but whatever ski you decide to get they make little spots on the exhaust that stick up ( 3d circle type things) these things are made to ware down over time feel around on them and don't be afraid to give em a good push because if one of these breaks when you are rideing it could spray water in the carbs and you will blow your motor like i did befor i knew about these things.. you can get them replaced at any welding shop if you just bring them your pipe

I agree 100% with what he said. Great for one person, but don't try a passenger. Unless it is a young child, at which point, the XP is too fast and sharply maneuverable to be safe for a youngster except at the slowest of speeds.

I would get the newer SPX. I loved the black bottoms on them, plus its a little newer. Do a compression check and see if you can find out the hours, and if either one has been rebuilt.. ALSO look for signs of a rebuild because people LIE and try to cover it up..

Both skis are basicly the same. 96 XP has the 787 in an X4 hull, 98 SPX also has the 787 in the X4 hull. The SPX used the 787 from 97-99. I have a 96 SPX720 and its a blast, I canonly imagine how a 787 in an X4 hull would be. Ive taken riders with me and have never felt that the ski was tippy. Ive taken it off some good size waves with a rider and never had an issue. It is an excellent hull for handling. I can easily out handle my buddys RXP but he gets me in the speed game. I would say buy the one that is i better shape. No way to find out the hours, theres no meter on either ski.

You may be able to hook them up at a seadoo shop and pull the hours from the computer. Not sure if they all do that, but I think a lot of them do.
