What keeps the water out of the driveshaft?

I pulled my 717 motor and the drive shaft pulled out of the impeller. I pulled the shaft out of the motor and stuck it back in the impeller, but I've noticed that water could easily come up the shaft into the motor cavity. Did I lose a bushing or something??

if the carbon ring is there it would not have come out. if somebody put the old style seal in, it can slide right out. the hose the shaft comes thru; is the end a flat black disc? or a seal with a grease fitting above it?
