Ok on the hose out of the water the Ideal is 3,000 and everything runs fine (smooth) But when I slowly give it throttle @ around 3,500-4,000 it starts to run erratic (run off like hopping) and will not really go any higher. Is this normal or do i got a carb issue. I Hit 7,000 rpm in the water but the lower rpms are sluggish and a lot of smoke comes out (plugs are good). so i go from 3,000 with a hesitation or lul to 7,000 fast then down. Any suggestions

I'm going to buy new carbs will this help?

Should easily hit the rev limiter at 7K with the tap of the throttle on the hose. Sounds like you could be having a rectifier issue. It will act like a lowered rev limiter and erratic running.

Moving to the 2-stroke boat section.

BTW I agree with Adam, try disconnecting the red lead on the voltage regulator, if the problem clears, replace the voltage regulator.

The engine sound you describe sounds like four-stroking due to a rich fuel mixture. Excessive fuel will probably irritate your eyes in a short period of time, it does mine.

But, a symptom of misfiring can also be caused by a charging system problem, often an excessive battery voltage is a clue, battery voltage should be very near 13.8 volts while the engine is running and not above 14.4 volts.

You noted there is a lot of smoke, if this is oil smoke you should check your pre-mix ratio if you are mixing your oil with the fuel or if you are using the oil injection system (I recommend this to reduce operating cost) the oil pump cable adjustment may be incorrectly set up.

If you don't have a BRP factory manual for your ski, you should obtain one b/c all of the adjustment and service procedures can be found in there, it will be a big help to have this.

IF you are in Neutral, this is normal!!! you are hitting the low rev limiter! so you don`t send your rpms to the moon!
IF your in Forward, you can rev the engine more but I do not suggest this. You can have a lean runaway and it will sit there and scream.

Does it sound something like this? Every time you hear it stutter (misfire) I'm in neutral giving it full throttle, you'll know when I'm in forward. Oh man I just love that sound!

Good catch you guys, that's exactly what's going on in this case. I didn't realize his was a boat and not a ski till you caught it.
