What is the best way to know if the jet pump is leaking.

Got a new WSM on the boat. Water tested it. Great and happy.

But how do I know the pump isn't leaking without opening the plug?
The original pump was damaged because zero oil left in the pump. Now obsessive to the leak. LOL

Remember when we talked about having the R&D shop turn out a couple aluminum replacement cones? The outboard motor industry solved the problem first long ago with a gasketed 3/8 -16 fill plug for the lower unit drain and vent and it works.

When I service one I use a couple q-tips dipped in lacquer thinner to clean the oil residue off the plastic threads and let it dry a minute, same for the plug threads and it's get's coated with 518 before going in the hole. This is a consistently reliable method for sealing things up but a better plug design with a gasket would be more practical to encourage more frequent oil changes given the rpm's the pumps spin up to on a regular basis.

I intend on giving teflon tape a shot this year, normally I avoid teflon tape but giving it some thought might be well suited considering the plastic threads in the cone.

Pretty sure I already described how I twice detected mine was leaking last year.

I used Teflon last year. But I blame myself that didn't know the "proper" way to use it. And killed the pump.
I think my trouble was that the threads pushed the Teflon away.

Hey my friend. It's been a while and I am back after the hibernation.
I looked very closely with my super duper iPhone at the plug and around the cone and at he bottom of the Venturi 2 days after 15 minutes of water test. Didn't see any sign of leaking.

I used gasket maker around the cone even it is not required by the manual. Used 518 to wet the O-ring, and 518 on the plug and in the hole. But I did not clean the oil totally in the hole before apply 518.

Yes, you need to make sure you wrap it properly so when you tighten the screw the tape is also tightened
