what is a driveshaft slinger?

Bought 2000 challenger without motor. Bought a new 240 efi power head. Looking in my factory mercury service manual it says make sure slinger is on driveshaft before installing pH. I have no clue what they are talking about. There are no pics showing what it is or how it goes. Any help?

I've pulled several of those engines... and I don't know either. What manual, and what page.

OK.... I think it's just a bad description.

On the output shaft of the crank.... there is a thin metal race for the oil seal. But, at the point of installing on the pump.... it would already be captured in the seal, and end cap that's bolted to the bottom of the engine.

You should be fine.

Just make sure the little O-rings are in place (B and C) I like to put a swipe of grease on them, to make sure they seat, and don't get pinched.

Looked it over better today there is something slid down on the drive shaft. I thought at first it was just a maching step. But looking at it today it appears to be a rubber peice of some sort. Looks like a rubber washer about 3/16 thick. I didnt try to pull it to see if anything was under it.
