what does cavitating

lack of performance....

It's a lack of performance. It's something you really can't see in your wake trail. But it feels like the engine revs, with no thrust. It's usually sporadic. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't. Normally, when you cavitate, you can back off the throttle and re-apply and it will pick up.

Cavitation should not be confused with the loss of your wearing ring. Once you exceed the tolerance on your wearing ring (.040"), then you'll have all the rpm you want, up and down, but no forward movement. Ninety percent of the time, that's the wearing ring that's give way.

If your cavitating, it's usually caused from sucking air in from the engine compartment, through the shaft, through hull fittings.
