This past weekend I went to the Annapolis boat show in Annapolis MD. Knowing it was time to move up from the 10 year old Islansdia, we bite the bullet and my wife and I bought a new Boat. Now the question is this. At the show, the dealer cut us, what I think was a good deal. With this “good deal” he only gave us low wholesale for our Islandia, $8500.00 this was sight unseen. Another dealer offered us $12,999 trade-in but would not get anywhere near as good a deal that I got at the show. Now I need to decide to take his offer of $8500 or try to sell it outright for something better. Knowing the boat I would think it would easily get $13,000 but I just don’t know. All that said I need to off load it in order to get the new boat

New boats are expensive, so many people are interested in used ones and not knowing what they should, they often get burned (that's another subject, though). I think you could probably get $13k for it if it shows very well, the prospective buyer should insist on a water test of course, so you'll need to accommodate that as well.

thanks for your reply, I would accommodate a sea trial for a legitimate buyer but the boat has already been winterized and shrink wrapped for this winter and I would not want to undo that for a joy ride.

May through mid July in the Midwest Great Lakes market you would likely realize close to fair retail value in the low 12K range for it if the condition merits that level of value, any other time of the year it wouldn't bring to much more than what was offered you as a trade allowance.

Markets and values vary widely but considering the allowance and any reconditioning needed for the deal to make ready for sale that was a pretty fair trade allowance from the dealer, I couldn't touch $8500.00 on if it was 100% condition, detailed and ready to sell going into storage season this time of year.

In your case that boat is likely going to attract a financing buyer for at least a portion of the total sum, and things have a way of going South with some of those folks after a successful sea trial etc. and you run the risk of having to bear the expense of winterization and wrapping all over again.

If the deal absolutely requires the current boat to go away, ask the dealer how long that allowance is good for and offer it for sale to the public contingent on a closing date to still be able to take advantage of the dealer's offer.

I'm not real knowledgeable about the boat business, but I do know the automobile business and from what I know low wholesale is pretty much customary. Your 10 year old Islandia is I assume a 2-stroke and as you know Seadoo is not manufacturing boats any more. So parts and service is going to get harder and harder to find. So you're trading 2-stroke technology for a 4-stroke, you're going to save money on gasoline and service, along with getting a new warranty. So I vote yes, after all it's not my money. LOL

BTW, what boat are you considering?

Lou

thank you all for your inputs, I am siding with handing it over to the dealer but wanted another opinion before I did. as for the new boat, I got the 2014 (new) Yamaha 242 ltd S.

The other option might be to immediately list the boat on Craigs List with a comprehensive description and see if you get some offers. If your boat is a truly great condition sweet freshwater boat with 100 hours on Rotax Twin 4-tecs or something like that then I bet you can get better than $8.5k but the buyer is going to want to have a sea trial.

If it's never been covered, left in the water out in the sun constantly, run 2,000 hours or more in saltwater and beat up I'd take the $8.5k

the boat is in great shape and well maintained and I already put it on CL. hope it works

condition: good

size / dimensions: 22 ft

So the wife and I went to the Annapolis boat show and fell in love with a new boat. Now they only want to give us wholesale for our current boat which is just under $9000. The boat is worth every bit of $13,000 to $15,000. That said I am trying to sell it first before I give it away. I would like to see what the interest is. The boat is currently winterized and shrink wrapped.

The boat: 2004 Sea Doo Islandia 22 ft. single engine jet boat. Great for the river as it has no prop to hang and hit debris. The boat is rated for 12 people. However it is more realistic to say 8-10. We routinely have 8 and it is comfortable for everyone. It has a 50 gal fuel tank, 20 gal fresh water, VHF radio, Garmin Marine depth/chartploter/fish finder. It has a head and changing room. also includes trailer.

This is boat has been a great fun family boat and now we have gotten to the point where we just want more. I will any best offer over $10,000. Call me ASAP if you're interested as I will be taking it to the dealer this week

I've had a lot of interest but no one with cash. if you know anyone let me know, I'm taking it to the dealer on the 13th of Dec.
