My 16 year old son and I have worked together on a '94 SPI with a 657X engine that I purchased at an charity auction last fall. Rebuilt the carbs, changed the fuel lines, etc. Last Saturday was the maiden voyage. All was great. My son couldn't be happier. On Sunday, I got a chance to take it for a ride. I rode it only a very short time, after my son had been riding it for 30 - 45 minutes, when it died. Would not start. Towed it back home. Compression check revealed my 140 / 140 psi was now 30 / 140 psi. Removed the head and jugs to look at pistons and cylinders. Pistons are scored. Rings damaged. Cylinders will need to be honed. What could have caused this ? No water intrusion from the sled tipping over so my only conclusion is a leak in the top end. Any suggestions on where I can find a good deal on piston and ring sets (might as well replace both) ? Any tips/ suggestions on how to avoid this in the future ? Thank you.
