Hello all. I finally talked the wife into us getting an old PWC to start off (maybe something a little newer in a year or 2 hehe). I have been looking at craigslist for over a month and finally I found what seemed like the first really good deal.

A 1995 XP with a new motor in 2007 and a 1997 SPX on a double trailer that was new in 2007.

Both have been stored outside under covers their whole life. These were run in the 2008 season then winterized and not used this season. Both start up well. A little smokey though

The weird thing is the one with the newer engine started spitting out a brown sludge where the exhaust comes out. It had a fair bit of oil in the sludge too. After a few minutes the sludge turned to dirty water with less oil in it but you couldn't see through the water coming out. It ran for 10 minutes or so and never got to being clear.

The guy selling had run it the day earlier to show someone else and this didn't happen, I am sure it didn't because there wasn't a puddle of gunk under the exhaust like there was after this try.

All I can think is that there was dried mud somewhere after the engine that got resaturated the first day and then flushed out a bit when I was there. Not knowing anything but what I have been gleaning from the web I have no idea if this is serious or just a easy fix. All my searches are turning up nothing.

I have some video of the skis running on youtube. I have no real life experience hearing PWCs running so if anyone wants to pop over and watch a short video to see if they sound normal that would also be appreciated.

I hate to join a forum and immediately leach off everyone but it will be a while before I can give back anything.

Thanks

you shouldnt be run'n them for no more than 5min, out of water. Best thing I say, is, do compression test, if numbers are decent, then take to water, and see how they perfrom. Everything perfroms well, out of water. Also, wouldnt worry about that crap, if anything the stuff built up inside the exhaust system, is break'n down..so, hit the lake/ocean with them, and then decide...

The old one sounds like it is running fine.

That IS some nasty looking stuff, but I want to agree with Timmy. Run it on clean water (lake, etc.) and I bet that stuff quits coming out after a while.
