We launched from Haulover in North Beach Miami and headed over on Thursday June 16th, the crossing was pretty rough, had waves between 3-6ft in height and took us 3 hours to cross. Pretty much used a full tank of fuel to get there!! the island is amazing, so much to see and do. We came back early Sunday morning, the ocean was really smooth and only took us just under 2 hours to get back and only used 1/2 a tank. It is a must do trip, but wouldn't do it on anything smaller then a 20ft boat and twin engines.

Wow, you are a braver man than I !! I called it quits on Lake Mead after about 30 minutes one day cause the waves were probably 2-3 feet high!

SWEET!!! That must have been a great trip! What did you do for backup fuel? That would be a big concern.

I would also be worried about sucking up some floating seagrass or other crap and getting stranded adrift in the gulf stream... Very un-cool....:(

I wouldn't have the balls to try it in anything smaller than my prior boat (30' Larson with twin I/O's). I got beat up a bit on Lake Ontario last week in 2-3 footers with the same boat as you, and wouldn't have wanted much bigger waves than that. I crossed Ontario once in 6-8 footers with the Larson, so I know what you went though. :puke:

Can't wait to see the photos & video. Major props to you!

You are either really brave or really dumb. Either way hats off to you. I am too CS to try it and jealous. I would probably get out of sight of land and run around in circles till I died, LOL.

LOL....I heard the words "you are crazy" at least 4 times a day while at Bimini Sands resort!! The trip over was pretty rough, but we left at 10:30 am and I think if we would of left at 7:00 am like we did when coming back it would of been allot smoother!! Out in the Atlantic channel the water was an unbelievable dark blue and didn't see any garbage floating around, then when at Bimini the water colour was again unbelievable. The only thing that worried me was the water depth, in some areas around the island it went from pretty deep to really shallow in no time and was hard to judge because the water is so clear.
When heading over we took an extra 10 gallons of fuel and stored it in the front locker, but we didn't need to use it. On the way back I didn't bring any spare fuel because it was at $6.19/gallon and we were going with the wind. We made it back to Miami on half a tank of fuel!!

All in all it was an awesome trip, would definitely do it again!! I have the Gold tow package from BoatUS so they would come out to Bimini if we had trouble...I also rented a EBIRB and had a SPOT just in case things got real bad and we needed help

I had 5 people total on my boat including 10 gallons of fuel plus everyone's clothes and a large cooler. We were loaded up but the boat handled it really well. The fastest I was able to go around Bimini was 45 mph but that was limited because of the water conditions, there is allot of wake around from all of the other boat traffic. There was a guy that came along with us on a PWC and when we were doing the 45 mph we hit a wave and actually got the whole right out of the water!!
When I boat around in the St. Pete's area with my wife and kids in smooth conditions I hit 52 mph via GPS and never have any type of porpoising.

I get that once in a while, but altering speed usually takes care of it.
