Well last night i started my 92 xp and it started up perfectly. I took it to the gas station this morning to fill it up before planning on spending the day. I put 5 gallons of non-ethnol fuel in it and 16 oz. of 2 cycle fuel the right kind not the tcw-3 stuff. Said to my self that today was just going perfectly. well boy was i wrong. Got to the river launched my seadoo and started it. gave it fuel and shot off like it did the other day. THEN THE TROUBLE BEGAN. after about 10 seconds it bogged down. wouldnt stay running. wouldnt idle right or nothing. I fiddled with it and then could figure nothing out. After thinking about some of the things that i have read here i remember someone saying how the fuel selector knob can get clogged . so i went to the nearest parts store really quick and then bypassed the switch and away it went. I havent tore it apart yet but i am hoping its the culprit. But when i thought my day was getting better i was very wrong. about 2 hrs later the starter quit. The bendix broke on it. so my day was cut short.

I called around and found a mechanic that specializes in seadoos. He is going to replace my starter for $120.00 thats labor and parts. he has a used starter that is in good shape for 75.00 so the rest is laobr. is that a reasonable price? Secondly he was looking at my seadoo and was telling me something about the fuel sending unit in my tank, how there is some sort of screens in the sending unit that can clog. has anyone heard of this before? He is telling me that is something i can mess with if i like and that taking the fuel selector switch apart and cleaning it is another thing i can do.

I want to do things so i become familar with the machinary but i dont want to open a can of worms. the Switch looks very sensible. The sending unit is the question that i am wondering about.

thank you for any and all help and advice

From all the advice I have received off this forum the first thing to look for are the grey tempo fuel lines. If they are grey, they should be replaced. The screen in the baffle is no big deal to take out and clean, it may be clogged. Also check the fuel filter. If you have the grey fuel lines the carbs and filters inside the carbs are probably clogged.

Read this thread. Helped me out allot. http://www.seadooforum.com/showthread.php?5563-Troubleshoot-Fuel-Delivery-Problems-low-revs-bogging-surging

well i have checked none of the lines are grey. i have all black lines and one red line running from the fuel selector switch to the carb. i am planning on cleaning the screens this week. should i use carb cleaner? air? whats good for cleaning them? thank you for your help

Well look at it this way, it wasn't all bad, it looks like you found an honest SeaDoo mechanic. $120.00 to replace a starter on a Sunday is very reasonable. I use Castrol Super Clean full strength to clean the gas filters. Carb. cleaner will melt the plastic mesh. I would also clean the fuel selector valve. If you can't find the Castrol, purple power would be my second choice.

well the mechanic couldnt do it today and fortunately he is working out of his house and lives just down the street so i am going to bring it by tommorow evening and he'll do it then. i am then going to work on the fuel screens after that. I didnt change the inline filter mostly because it looks nice and clean. but i guess they can look that way and still be a problem. so its probably better to change it will i am in the cleaning mood. I appreciate it as usual thanks for everything. i know that i may never be as knowledgeable in seadoos but if yall need advice in Drywall. I can help you there.

I had a fellow seadoo forum member rebuild my carbs for me. Carbs looked good as gold on the outside. However, the carb filters looked like you sunk em in tar. Can't always go by outside appearances.

120 bucks parts and labor is a steal, expecially for that one. i remember back in HS i had to replace the brushes in my g/fs 91 xp because the bendix stuck and chewed through the brushes. i was using like 2ft of extensions and a mirror to see what i was doing in there. at the time, i thought i was pretty S-M-R-T because i only had to buy a $25 set of brushes instead of a $175 starter.

well today i went to the mechanic that was going to put the starter in. and my day got worse. first off the starter he was going to put in was a 8 tooth starter and mine was a 9 tooth . so that wouldnt work. so he found me one on sbt for 100.00. Secondly while we were looking at my seadoo he found my i guess its called my exhaust tube? Its leaking. He has a guy to weld it and fix it for me. He is going to replace the starter, fix the pipe, check my compression and put a water seperator in for me for 240 dollars labor and everything. Is that a good deal? i dont know if it is or isnt. i seems good to me. but i hope that after this i can take it out for atleast a couple of weeks b4 another problem creeps in.

Not sure if that's a good deal or not, someone will chime in. I have my first ski as well, put a little into it also. Grew up with my dad having boats, one thing I know is they can be money pits. Best thing after its running good is just keep up on the maintenance. Good luck bro, you'll get her running good and having fun.

thanks man i appreciate the support. I am staying positive about it. so far after paying 500 for it. i have had to spend 120 for new springs on trailer. and now 240 for starter and exhaust pipe water leak. and 100 for battery and a couple life jackets. But like my wife has been saying we only paid 500 for it so if we have to put a little thats one thing. hopefully now after this we will be happy for a bit. I will say the darn thing hauls. its very quick for being 20yrs old. at least thats my opionon. things will work out. they always do.

i have the same problem with my pipe.. its VERY common for these things to go .. bring it to a local metal shop and for 10-20 buck theyll weld it.. you can get a compression guage and do it ur self for less then 20 bucks.. and are u talking about this water separator for 3 bucks?

i dont want to steer you in the wrong direction man but you can do everything but the starter your self for a lot less.. are you mechanically inclinded?

Yes I am but the problem I am having is I am very busy at work and am at the moment busy with work with only sundays off from work. I thought about handling the pipe my self but with work and all just figured it to be easier while he had it for the starter let him handle. I am planning on handling stuff grom here on out. Because I want to get familar with the machine. Ust a little nervous about the pipe. The water seperator and compression check he said he. Was gonna do to help me out.

Well just got it back from the mechanic. he welded up my exhaust pipe looks very good and the starter is working like a champ. he gave me a water seprerator. and checked my compression. My compression came out at 150. Which i am hoping is good and which means i am starting to make progress. now do i put the fuel tank line at the arrow in mark? and then the fuel switch at the out arrow mark? or is it the other way? i told the mechanic that i would handle it. i probably should have had him do it. but figured i should learn. thanks for any and all help.
