A buddy at work has a Speedster with Rotax engines. He said he had the wear rings replaced this year. Does the Mercury M2 have a serviceable wear ring? If so how do I check it. I've looked at online prints but don't see it. Thanks

Yeah search around. plenty of mercury owners have had good luck by filling in the gouges with JB weld and then sanding it smooth. A new wear ring for the mercury is $$$$.

You can also get the ring refinished. I am doing that this fall from impros. http://impros.com/store/

A lot cheaper than a new one.

hey did you end up getting your wear ring refinished is this what you were talking about? im def gonna send my impeller there here are some pics of what mine looks like.. Where did you get the special nut driver? thanks

I have not gotten my done yet. We just had our 3rd Child a month ago and it is a little hectic around here. I was hoping to have it done by now but time and $$$ are not working in my favour. I have decided to put it off to next season. The boat ran fine last year but I definitely know it needs to be done for the next season (2013).

As for the tools, I just purchased them from Crowley Marine's website. I can't remember the part numbers but if I do find them, I will post them for you.

Cheers,

Gord

I am back on for sending my Wear Ring, Impeller and Stator to impros. Should be getting it sent off next week and have it back within the next 2 - 3. Hopefully before the May 24 long weekend.

Got them sent off yesterday.

Thats about my X-20 looks. Let me know what they charged. Im still temped to do the JBweld

Koby, I see you are using the hydro-surge grate. Have you had any problems with it? The second time we ran ours we sucked up a beer can. I did some research and replaced it with a grate we purchased from eBay.

Can't help you with Impros.

The part number for the S.S. 12 tine grate is: 854810T 1

The part number for the aluminum 6 tine grate is: 852962T

I've been thinking about getting the 12 tine myself.

What would the advantage be between the two? where should I tell him to look for one? dealer?

I think the advantage with the stainless steel would be that it's more durable and you could run shallow. There is only about $30 difference between the two from what I've found. The reason I've been wanting one is the pictures I've seen in this forum of the hydro-surge grate tine breaking off and getting sucked into the impeller. Purely preventative maintenance for me. I wish El Toro would weigh in on this. He said he found a grate for $85. The lowest I could fine on the SS was $189 and the aluminum was $159.

Yeah his has a few tines broken off already and we were going to switch to a solid grate. I guess we will try the jb weld method on the wear ring first. I might call impros tomorrow and see what they say about the wear ring. I read somewhere they charged 450 to machine the housing and fit a stainless liner. I wish he would too because the prices you listed are the same I've found.

I guess I need to start doing them at my shop. $450 is nutz. It should be half that price with machining, and labor. Heck... for $450... I can just machine billet aluminum mid housings.

I wonder if I can buy the rings?? I guess I could make my own.

Hummmmmmmmmmm. I'll keep you guys updated on this.

Impros did an awesome job. Everything looked brand new. Got it all installed and went up 2 weeks ago and had an oil alarm. Figured out it was a screen (filter) on the oil hose that was plugged up so that got fixed but it took me most of the weekend to fix that so I couldn't run the boat and I had to work last weekend. Heading up this weekend so I will give another update Sunday night.

It was right at a year ago when we replaced out grate. Our son did the eBay search and purchased it, I just paid for it! It is a fixed grate. When he gets home later today I will see if he can look up where he purchased it. If I remember correctly, ours is cast aluminum.

I bought ours on Ebay for $85 as well. There was a dealer that had a number of them. A few of us on here jumped on them right away.

Just keep a search active for those part numbers. The stainless is usually quite a bit more expensive and I have never seen it under $100. It is what they call a shallow water grate as the tines are thinner, but stronger as they are stainless steel. They say the flow is the same as the tines are thinner.

For the money, the cast one is working great for us, and we don't have the hydro-surge worry anymore.

Good luck!

PS: Of all the things to find in a local hardware store, we have one here that sells liquidation items. There were a stack of grates in their liquidation center. Without the part numbers on me, I was unsure if they were the SeaDoo/Merc grates, but I knew they were definately jet grates. I should go back with those numbers and find out.
