so my ski doesnt have any acceleration and when i have a passenger on, i can barely get the ski to move because it cavitates so much. I am pretty sure this means I have wear ring problems. I am about to do a bunch of work on my ski this spring break and I was thinking I should try to fix this problem. If it is wear ring problems, how hard of a job will this be. I also would like to know if I access it from the back of the ski. I saw a diagram and it looked like i just need to remove the black nossle thingy out the back and ill be able to access it. some pointers would be great because im mechanically handicapped and this might be a hard project for me.

thanks in advance for any help:rofl:

Do a search on here or read it up in the manual. It is not a very difficult job, but could cost you up to $200 if you start replacing bearings and stuff.

The boat will need to be out of the water for 24 hours while your sealants dry. Actual job takes a couple hours first time.

Skill level....

This is a low skill level job for a mechanic. But, for someone mechanically handicapped, it's going to be a bit tougher.

You'll have to order the seadoo impeller removal tool. It's less than $20 bucks. This is the only special tool you'll need. It's also best if you have a vise to sit the pump in when removing.

The impeller threads should be locked so you may need a cheap torch (you can get one at Wal Mart) to break the compound. Hit the center of the impeller with heat for 3 seconds, then try to remove the impeller.

Normally, when you remove the impeller, this is a time to decide on re-doin the bearing, seals and impeller. If your impeller is still in good shape, then you wouldn't worry with it. But, when you remove the shaft, you should replace the bearing housing seal. If you don't, you will need to do an air test on the pump to make sure you don't leak water into the oil cavity.

As timmyboy said, do a search on wearing ring repair or removal and read the threads. You may understand it better and be willing to give it a shot. If you do, you can always rely on help from the forum members....

hmm ok well this is sounding like i might just have to have a professional do it. that impeller removing tool sounds like something hard to get ahold of. ill have to read myshop manual to see some specifics on this job before i try it. thanks for the help

Easy to find....

The impeller removal tool is easy to find. You can find it at www.sbtontheweb.com for about $12 to $20 bucks. I don't remember the exact cost. It's just a small part, about 2 or 3" long and has a socket head type male on one end and the splined end on the other for fitting into the impeller.

I don't mean to put you off on this. If you have the shop manual, you may very well read it and find that it's not that hard. It really isn't.

You mentioned that you just take the bucket off and it's there at the nozzle. No, you have to remove the entire jet pump from the transom to get to it.

Bearings, impeller....that isn't required but I'd recommend anyone that pull it, inspect it and change them out if needed. This is the prime time to do that maintenance.

Wear Ring

Just did one of these Jobs, i have the same Ski, 96 GSX.

Ordered the Impeller removal tool and pulled out the impeller, replaced the wear ring and checked all seals and bearings. Everything checked out so i put it back together, its going in the water for tests soon...
